My Thumb!!

Hi all, this bass has been MIA for a VERY LONG time. I've had it for many years now, but didn't play it for most of those years. I have finally come to my senses and started playing it again full time, and am just loving everything about it.

It's an '89 Thumb NT that my father bought used sometime in the 90s from a Berklee student.

I am playing it now in my R&B/Funk band. Fretless may not be the most common for this type of music, and it is a challenge, but in a lot of ways I prefer it to fretted.

Oh yeah, and that is indeed my custom ebony gaboon ramp. As you may have noticed, there is a small shim in there. Well, the ramp shrunk! I thought ebony was a dense wood and wouldn't shrink that much, but I guess I was wrong. When I made it it was a perfect fit, nicely wedged in between the pickups. I was going to make another one with the grain going the other way, but I didn't really feel like it, so I just cut a piece of my ramp trial #1 and wedged it in there. I honestly wish I didn't need the ramp at all, but before this I was playing a Musicman Sterling with the humbucker pickup, which I would play over. I got so used to playing with support under my fingers that once I switched to this bass and lacked the support I felt like I didn't know how to play anymore (and the front pickup itself isn't wide enough). I like the look with the ramp, though.
 
BDiamond, Welcome to the forum, sweet fretless thumb! Interestingly enough, I also have a homemade ebony gaboon ramp for my thumb. I have always wanted a thumb support right in between the pickups where there is a good balance of string tension and tone, so I gave it a shot: It didn't turn out quite perfect so I have plans to try again, but It does take quite a bit of work to get it just right with the angle between the pickups and the contour of the body (and to think after all that work that it could shink over time!) The other thing like you said is that it is difficult to find a piece big enough with the grain in the right direction.
 
My mistake....mine isn't gaboon, it's Macassar ebony. And I should have given credit where credit is due - I found your Thumb Ramp Project and basically modeled my ramp after yours....THANKS!! I notice now that your pickup height is much higher than mine, so my ramp is much thinner than yours.

I agree with right hand position - the optimal position, especially with the fretless, is right between the pickups. That way the strings are not too stiff and the tone not too trebly, but at the same time I don't get too much fretless MWAH. I know that's what people love about fretless, but to be honest, I'm not a big mwah fan.
 
My thumb arrived here this morning!

Its a very different beast to the $$, and I dont find neck dive a problem like I thought I would.

Yes way man! Well its obviously personal opinion but some thumbs have abit different shapes and thats the best one also love the wood grain ;p

edit : no way man was obviously for not selling it :<?
