5.6kg does not sound soooo bad for a 6-Stringer- I meand Bubinga + Snakewood = really heavy:-)
for this config you have been quite lucky with 5.6 :-)

Agreed...5.6kg was really lucky, given the woods used! However, my "back spine" prefers something around 4.0kg or less these days, for any length of time...gotta love the aging process??! :-)
 
I don't think I posted in here with my current Thumb. Granted, these pictures are a little outdated as I made some very minor changes, but here she is:

That's a 1992 Thumb. The preamp is an Aguilar OBP-3 with a push/pull mid, vol/vol stack, and an active/passive switch. Wired in 18V, so one battery is in the battery compartment, and the other is under the control cavity, haha.

I wish I had left it active and had a mid switch, but oh well. In the picture are DiMarzio Ultra J neck pickups custom ordered with flush magnets, but I replaced them with Area J necks (the Ultra Js are for sale if anyone is interested). I've replaced the knob so they all somewhat match, and the ultralites are still on there too. I shielded the whole thing with copper foil. Currently strung with Black Beauties, which I'll use on fretless forever.

What's amazing is that using this powerful preamp, I can retain a tasteful Jaco tone, or goose the knobs and get a very large, aggressive Jaco tone. I'm amazed that you can actually EQ a tone like that to be so massive - that sound tended to be a little nasal and light on the bottom end. Not so with the OBP-3 - turn the bass knob more than 1/4 the rotation past the centre detent and the floor is shaking.
 
The same reason why Prec is better than Jazz bass. It is not.
They are different.

Thumb costs much more but I like Thumb BO (with old wood combination) better.
I believe Stage II is the best Warwick but I always wanted (and finally got) Thumb BO.
 
Apart from the characteristic growl * of the NT, preamp is different (3Band vs 2Band).

* But Compared to past models, those of today have the same wood species where as before the BO was the body in ovangkol, the NT has always kept his body in bubinga.

So I would say that it is above all a matter of taste...and the model (year)!

I just got this 1988 Thumb. I always loved my Streamers. I've now gone through 4 of 'em, but this Thumb is beautiful aesthetically and tonally. Good golly miss molly. Even for being almost 30 years old, the punch! And the neck is straight which is sweet.
 
Oh boy! Struck by GAS again. I used to own 2-3 of them, they are amazing! Best instruments I've ever played!

I think it's already claimed by the cat though, no chance for anyone else.
 
Finally purchased my unlined fretless thumb 4 from 1987. Have been playing a fretless Thumb 5 NT with line markers for years and years now, but finally took my chance when I saw this beauty.

Anyway, 1999 BO 6 here!

I'll try to take some more flattering pics, the wood grain is pretty cool.





Fitted with SD Basslines, it was apparently made with these, according to the email I got when I requested some information (as it's a pre-2000 model, the online database doesn't cover it).

Plays like a dream, and it really shines for the type of music I'm involved in (it's even really great for the punk stuff I do, but I use my Stingray for that.)

I was thinking about my next Warwick being another Thumb, but I am very tempted by a $$ Corvette 6.
 
hello!
i need to change the frets on my Thumb 4BO, and i need to know would the steel frets change the sound if i replace the bronze ones with them? i heard this long time ago and don't know if it's true.
