=The Warwick Thumb Club=

I've seen the pics on TalkBass too :) Very nice & cool looking Thumb, congrats!
 
Hey guys!!! I'm new here cuz I juz found this forum... hahax... man i so love warwick but I've got no cash to buy it >.< well.. I'm saving up now =]

Hhhmm.. I've got an issue about warwick here in my country... as I live in Singapore and the humidity level here averages about 90% while the norm is 45% to 50%... and so, most of my friend's warwick basses neck warped up till the point of cracking... a corvette and a thumb.. both necks cracked badly... I was wondering if there's any solution to it? other than having a dehumidifier at home...? Would the natural high gloss solve that problem? or frequent and after a long time of waxing would build up resistance to the high humidity here?

Thanks IngerAlb, this Thumb was the missing link in my playing, sometimes it sounds too aggressive alone, but with a band it always sounds great, no matter what style the Thumb fits perfectly (it fits as well in the church mix as it does playing metal with my friends). Can you post a link so I can here you music?
 
Well, I haven't recorded anything with my Thumb so far; with my previous band ( ) I used to play melodic metal, but all the recordings you can listen to on their MySpace were made with Ibby (EDB555). With my current band ( + ) I'm still working on songs so we're nowhere near the final recording stage. But soon we'll try to film some rehearsals so ppl would get to see & hear a few songs - it's a mixture of thrash, Pantera riffs and heavy metal that we like to label as "metal" - plain & simple, hehe :)

Hi Matt & welcome.
You know of 2 basses that deveolped warped necks?I dont think that warrants the belief that it's going to happen to every Warwick in Singapore.If Warwick laminated necks are prone to warpinghow do Fender & other similar one piece necks fare?
There's lots of Warwick players in Singapore & other countries with very similar climates that have no problems.
I just wanted to put this missconception into perspective.Good luck.
 
I'm actually quite scared of getting a warwick here in Singapore as the moment I mention warwick basses, i always get this 'warwicks won't be able to survive in Singapore' and it happens every single time without fail :(

Hhhhmm.. laminated necks? what do you mean by those? the ones with high gloss finish? Well I know warwick rockbasses doesn't have much of a problem here in Singapore =] But I want a Thumb hahax XD

What you're hearing is rumour.Completely untrue.An urban myth.
A laminated neck is made of more than one piece of wood,cut with the grain running at different agles & glued together for maximum stability & strength.
Rockbass necks are cut & glued exactly the sme as Warwick necks so the fact that people are saying that it never happens to Rockbasses proves that it's incorrect.If it happens to Warwick necks,it's definatly going to happen to Rockbass necks too.
As far as it happening "every time,without fail" Maybe you should talk to some existing Warwick owners & dealers that are in south east Asia who experience the same humid climate you get in Singapore.

Oh I see, cool thanks greg =] Sorry for my inexperience... I'm not very knowledgeable in these stuffs...

So that means the bass won't be more or less resistance to the humidity whether the bass has a high gloss finish or a natural oil finish?

I have a Fender Jazz '62 reissue and it doesn't warps at all... =]

Mate,no problem.I'm happy to help anyone decide.Especially when they might base their descision on rumour or missinformation.
Your Warwick neck will be one of the most stable available anywhere.It makes no difference if it's natural oil or high gloss.The neck will be as solid as a rock.
If your Fender one piece rock maple neck is ok with the Singapore humidity,your Warwick neck will be fine.It's a hell of alot more stable than any Fender neck.
I owned a couple Fenders previously & neck problems were common.Uneven frets,fast fret wear,unstable necks that bent & sometimes twisted,dead spots all over the fingerboard.You name it,it happened.Now that I think back,it was 3 Fenders I had.All needed neck work at some stage.That was in Sydney's climate.
I've also "heard" of Warwick necks not being stable in climates like Singapores.When I looked into it,& I really looked INTO it.I found 2 cases of neck problems & both were easiy fixed at relatively low cost.
Next time someone tells you all Warwicks will fail in Singapore.Ask them how they know.You'll more than likely find that they heard or read it it online & never met the owner,let alone atually saw the basses in question.

And I wonder how my friend's brother's two Warwick necks cracked so badly =/ and while his Fender signature Marcus Miller bass doesn't have any problems at all

Sorry, I refuse to believe Warwick makes inferior products, or that your brother "just got two bad eggs from the dozen."

I claim user related. If someone has one warped neck, they're bound to have another.

That's called misuse.

Anything from using as a baseball bat... To improperly adjusting your trussrod could lead to a warped neck.

I think a majority of the enthusiast world may be improperly educated when it comes to caring for their guitars, I've seen / heard plenty of problems in my day. Cranking down on trussrods, improperly shimming neck pockets to using the wrong gauge strings for the application. (tension.)

I'm in no way saying your brother is incompetent or that you're lying, I just find it hard to believe that he has not one but two faulty Warwicks.

Sometimes, you just can't deny the common variable, even if it is yourself.
 
mmMMmm.... well... my friend's brother bought the bass from someone else... maybe the other owner didn't take care of it properly or the new owner just doesn't know how to take care of it.... I dunno.. haha. I just found it scary
 
Usually, if you keep the neck good and waxed, and smoothed out every now and then with 000 steel wool or a Scotch Bright pad, you should be fine.

Storing the bass away from the open air, like in a case/closet when not in use, helps a lot too. I live in Vermont where, during the summer, the humidity can get in the 80-90% range, (damn swamp...). I make sure to put my bass in its bag, and sometimes in the closet away from the open air whenever I am not using it. Inside the case I have a pouch of silicon desiccant, which helps soak up excess humidity. The opposite problem is in the winter when I have the heater on all the time and the humidity in my house gets below 20%. Then, I just oil/wax it more often.

Again, wax and proper storage is the key.;) I hope you can get a Wick soon! I waited about ten years before finally saving the money for one. Don't know why I waited so long, but I'm really happy now!8:
