or have I just committed a Warwick sin

I have EMG pickups in both my 4-string & 5-string SSIIs, which is what a lot of the late 80's models originally came equipped with and they they sound great! They have nice lows & highs but what really makes them stand out to me is the pronounced midrange that seems to be missing from a lot of the other pickups I've tried which include MEC, Bartolini, Basslines, & Lane Poor pickups. It's the mids which I feel really help the bass cut through, especially in a "rock" setting.
Also, after experimenting with MEC, Basslines, EMG, Bartolini, & Lane Poor onboard preamps, I've finally settled on the Aguilar OBP-1 preamp in both my SSIIs cause I think it keeps the clarity while still giving you a flexible preamp without altering the natural tone of the pickups/bass too much. The OBP-1 does seem to warm up the EMGs a bit in a warm musical way, cause they can be rather bright sounding by themselves.

When it comes to the SS2,I doubt anyone could actually improve it's perfection. But then,I'm one of them snobby purists.

The stock pickups were originally EMG or Bartolini in the 80's. Schlobadan has an '89 SSII with stock EMG pickups

When MEC came to making their own pickups for Warwick, they had the opportunity to make them anyway they pleased,& they did an amazing job.The EMG's & Barts are off the shelf pups mate.Used coz They were the best available at the time. But times have changed,& so have electronics,in a BIG way.

Here she is - 2000 Streamer Stage 1 5-string, honey-violin finish, broadneck, 20 mm spacing, Seymour Duncan Basslines. I'm madly in love with her.
93 Streamer bolt on, finish was redone once already in a terrible color. If it ruins it, more reason to strip it to the Cherry!
