OK. One more well known bass builder.

Nothing obscure here. You can find his name
on headstocks in ordinary retail music stores:
ernie ball?
`

Ernie Ball's name is on every headstock that bears Sterling's name ...

But the picture is of a Sterling Ball [sterling silver]. So you're close
but Greg and Kris really nailed it. There was meaning in that word
"punish", in that it implied that the hint-pic was pun-ish :-)

Lets show off some of our basses without a big W on the headstock.

I'll start it off with my Lakland. :D

it clearly has no big W on the headstock :3

and here`s the headstock for proof

:P

Buy used, saves you a lot of money! Of course that whole rig is worth a lot of money, but new would be way too expensive for me. I just ran into a few more than great deals an jumped on them. :)

Yup. That one was Ned, better known by his initials,
usually suffixed by a '2' or a '4'. And, of course, the
earliest correct reply is posted by the man with the
semi-headless bass banana !

So here's another one 4 U-Haul.
Your only hint is the initials: CLF.

I believe that would be the inventor of the electric bass guitar, Clarence Leonidas Fender AKA Leo Fender. :)

And got a very very sweet setup in the process!
I have a sweet spot for F-basses, just because they are Canadian... :P

Yeah it really is a killer bass. The humbuckers have a real nice singlecoil-vibe on them, without the noises. Basically, it sounds like an old Fender. Plays great and one of the nicest necks I've ever seen:

Great piece of ash:

:)

I'll look for pics of my other basses too.

Yup.

I believe he is also one of the founders
of the Bop til You Drop movement .....
IIRC he pretty much worked til he died.

I know that his workbench and office
are still kept untouched, left just as he
last worked there. I recall the pic of it,
but don't remember where. I spoze it
would be on some GnL fan site.

bull's eye.

Wawlnut / limba body, bubinga / wenge neck, mac ebony fb, big humbucker and slim humbucker, with Alan's sweet preamps and 18 volts circuitry.

I can't wait to get my hands on it. If you are looking for an affordable, incredible, unique 100% custom, look no further.

I believe the photo of his workshop is in the book 'The Bass Book'. But I also found this:

Does this qualify?

AHH man I'm incredibly jealous I love Alan's bass's but can never afford them (although for custom they are very reasonably priced). I look at his basses all the time because he posts pictures at project guitar.....

GGRRR
