Hello all, I’m a long term Thumb owner. My ‘90 Thumb has been a fave, I play it at home a fair amount, the occasional gig, but the heavy weight has seen it left at home more often than not. Enter this lightweight ‘05 Thumb which arrived from BassBros earlier this week… thought it was worth a post here given it’s unusual. A custom order with a flamed maple top and swamp ash body.. it’s just 3.7kg on my scales which is a joy on the back!

First impressions are that the U neck profile is unfamiliar to me, I was a little worried at first I wouldn’t get on with it but I find it surprisingly effective for supporting a comfortable technique across the fretboard! Its challenged some preconceptions I’ve had historically about what sort of neck profiles I should like.

The sound has most of the classic thumb flavour but the low-mid snarl is not as bold as the ‘90, It seems to have a more balanced profile across the EQ spectrum and can kick out some serious low end, seemingly more so than the ‘90.

Overall - a lovely instrument and I wore it very comfortably for a 3 hour rehearsal earlier in the week. Im hoping it’s going to see quite a bit of mileage!

What a nice find! Swamp ash can be quite heavy too depending on which part of the tree it came from. Enjoy it!

Now that´s a lightweight! But what about neck dive without the counter weight of a heavy body?

The balance is certainly towards the neck - but much less than I expected, it doesn’t dive at all with the suede strap I use!

Bros, I decided to get new electronics for my red Thumb nt5. I got the M 60201 5 SET BMB - MEC Active J/J-Style Bass Pickup Set, Metal Cover, 5-String - Brushed Black Chrome and for preamp, the SP W 70223 - Warwick Parts - Active 3-Way Onboard Bass Electronics for Active Pickups (Vol+Bal PP / T+B / M) - for Thumb NT and Infinit. Now waiting for delivery

Not a fan of upgrading the old 2EQ on a Thumb to a 3EQ, it doesn't need the extra mid-range control imho.

Yeah, well. The pickups were aftermarket and the preamp pots were almost stuck and the sound took in mobile signal noises. And the output jack of course works 50% of the time. So I figured I'd go back to brand new MEC pickups pots and pre. Seems you can get a 3 band for the thumb now, so I figured it'd be useful, if the Masterbuilders think so. The 2.8khz treble on the 2-band is hmm interesting, and not something I felt helped when I looked for a good sound for me, either when cut or boost. So for me it's no loss, and looking forward to new sounds. I think it will rock!

Ive ordered a new thumb 5 bo fretless. Very hard to find. I alteady have the same bass fretted. Im selling my $$ corvette 5 to help cover the cost. The $$ doesn’t work for me. Im buying the fretless thumb not having played one. Bit scary, I hope it lives up to my fretless thumb tone research.
