Well, I'm slowly slogging through the first metal song I've ever written, having finished the intro and working on the section with the first vocal verses when I thought I might be wanting a guitar with an industrial grade whammy bar and a locking nut- something which I've never owned. Mind you the intro ends with a power chord going through rhythmic whole step drops until it fades out, at which point the vocals begins- certainly manageable by my 1990 Strat Ultra Plus with its Wilkinson roller nut and Sperzel locking tuners. But what if during the solo break things intensify and I want to get more aggressive?

So voila!! A used Charvel MJ San Dimas HSS. It was the gold hardware on black and ebony fretboard that got me-

No worries - Charvel and its parent company Jackson were purchased by Fender in 2002. Interestingly Wayne Charvel was a Fender employee in the 70's who started a repair shop for out of warranty Fender instruments. Eventually he started making his own Strat style instruments using Schector bodies and their Fender-licensed necks. Apparently Fender didn't have a problem with that but they eventually threatened Schector with a legal action after they stared making complete guitars with Strat necks in the early-80's. They also threatened Jackson/Charvel at about the same time for similar reasons.

Yamaha must have had reps with really good people skills given they weren't bothered by Fender for their Pacifica despite the Strat style headstock. They also got a pass from Gibson with their 80's era SG90 and SG1000 models that kind of looked like the SG, though they were asked to remove the SG designation on American models (Yamaha changed it to SGB for those but retained the SG for the Japanese market).

I wondered how Hamer managed to make a copy of the Gibson Explorer called the Standard, because it had a maple flame top and trapezoidal displays like the classic Gibson Les Paul Standards of the late-50's, without getting sued. Research field that ,,, wait for it ... they contacted Gibson first and got a license permit to make a 1000 of the Standard in addition to 1000 of their version of the Flying V. Strange times indeed when a manufacturer asks for permission first. Apparently Gibson didn't care if they made their version of the Les Paul Jr called the Special Jr. which looked quite similar.
 
I hate Fender for purchasing G&L and immediately destroy it as a brand. They literally threw all the stuff from Leo's workshop, which should belong in a museum, to a trash container.

Despicable people.

It wouldn't look bad but I'm one of those weirdos who likes gold hardware on some instruments. But I love the black on my Warwick Thumbs and wish my Corvettes had the black. So there's a guy on YouTube who was in the process of switching the gold hardware on his San Dimas to black and it looked pretty good with the black tuners on the maple headstock but I was thinking "Dude keep the gold tremolo on that black body!"

One thing to bear in mind is that Fender itself is owned by a big financial investment firm based out of Hawaii called Servco Pacific

With all this recent controversy with Fender I went through a few phases-

- Ignore it

- Was mad at Fender when I realized they bought out Kaman Guitars among others-

-Was mad at PRS for what I feel is a blatant use of the Fender Strat body style for their Silver Skies model-

-Don't care anymore but thought if I decided on another Strat type I would seriously look at the Yamaha Pacifica Pro Series-

As it is I've pretty much made all the Fender purchases, some of which go back to the mid-80's
