Beautiful song... I was listening to his interview and he mentioned how he went through a Beatles phase... where he wondered how they managed to make a complete song in two and a half minutes. His songwriting process changed from adding things to a song, to subtracting things, which is actually more difficult. I am just amazed by his songwriting. And he surely delivers in the 2:30 minutes challenge. One of my favourites:

sure he does. i read stuff on the internets that lyrical themes in Æon Spoke prove that Paul is gay, however, i just don't care, the album is just too good to start me thinking bad about him or more important, his music, because of his sexual orientation. that's so irrelevant.

check out "The Fisher Tale", "Nothing" and "Grace". gotta love those songs.

Incidentally the other day I was in a similar process about Chuck Schuldiner... There is the stereotypical lisp in his voice also the way he moved... Have a look at one of his interviews. Also the way he "married" his music and was so devoted to what he did, it seems there was some internal turmoil and that was therapy for him. I always had a suspicion, but some people question it openly atm. I honestly could not care less about it, it's totally indifferent to me... We are all human beings and it's about time we started respecting one another. Why think bad about it...

absolutely.

Lots of people have speculated that regarding Chuck. My friends and I spent time with Chuck every time we'd see Death - eating together, talking music, and just generally having a good time. He was always a great guy, which belied some of the things that people would say back then, and never once did he ever lose patience with autograph kids or other musicians. Anyway, we never questioned his sexuality because it never mattered. He wasn't the type of guy that chased the ubiquitous fishnet and mascara metal slut around the club, but he never veered the other way, either.

Chuck was a smart guy who articulated himself well when he spoke. He didn't like conflict, especially if it threatened physical harm (he HATED stage diving and once threatened to stop a show in Pittsburgh unless it stopped). I never once heard of him doing an interview or a show while chemically imbalanced. He took his job seriously. He didn't act like the 'typical metal moron' - no hotel rooms destroyed, no paternity suits, no drug busts, and no alcoholic rages. From what I've seen, Paul is the same way. I only met him once (and that was when he and Sean Reinert were in Death) but he conveyed the same spirit that Chuck did.

If either or both are/were gay, so be it. If every musician out there were as pleasant to be around and as musically gifted as those two, I wouldn't care if the whole damned industry was gay.

Thanks for your input Doc. I just realized why it annoys me to hear people say "he's gay". It's not about the validity or invalidity of the statement. It's because it simplifies people. People are so much more than their sexuality. And they are infinitely more than a *stereotype* about their sexuality. Even more so when we 're talking about musicians with this kind of talent and devotion to their work... It just doesn't make any sense.

You might ask then, why were you searching about it? Why do you ask the question? That's a valid point. First I 'll answer that curiosity is a natural human trait. Then, I think in a way I wanted to know more about a person I admire a lot, perhaps in an effort to understand a little more where he comes from. But this kind of info would only be put in context with everything else I know about the person, or have received from their work. It would not be used to remove everything else (including the *really* important stuff like music) and just be used as a stereotype by itself, the way people usually use this kind of info to gossip and cause intrigue... I hope I am making sense.

Although I never got any real answer about it and don't actually expect to any more, I would add that perhaps I wanted to "clear this up" so that I forget all about it. After all it's easier to be indifferent to an answer than it is to a question.

Great post, Yanni. I hope you in no way took anything I said as defensive or offensive to your original post. It just intrigued me as I had heard the same thing on numerous occasions. Bless ya!

This may be the most mature forum on the entire webernetz. Thumbs up.

Just like Flo I'm absolutely not interested in da personal livez of da musicianz, but I really appreciate da little discussion that's going on here...thumbz up !...8:

you made a great point in the post, yanni

and i have to point out Paul's answer to a question about rumors that he and Sean are gay, and his response is something so cosmically true:

ARHAIC-MAGAZINE:
Rumors frequently pop up on message boards on the internet speculating about Sean Reinert and you (Paul) being gay. While this in itself is nothing noteworthy since every human being is free to be whichever he or she chooses to be. However, in the rock/metal world it still seems to be a stigma where people sometimes are surprised to hear that musician X publicly admits being gay while for insiders it was never a secret to begin with. Now I know some people expect me to ask you about your sexual orientation but I leave that to you whether you want to answer that. Regardless of that issue though, it would be interesting to hear your point of view on this strange stigma that the metal music genre seems to have.

PAUL MASVIDAL (CYNIC, ÆON SPOKE):

Metal began as an overtly masculine, macho, armored male genre. Funny enough an artist like Rob Halford learned how to turn that around and use that (biker) masculinity in a deceptively homoerotic fashion. Now it’s blaringly obvious, but it went right over the metal scene’s heads back then. As the lines get further blurred and the genre expands with a more open-minded approach, we find the barriers that keep’s metal in the dark ages dissolving one day at a time. I only see fear when people are judging others. It’s all projection and inner confusion that leads to such ignorance.
