What are you listening to..ATM?

The Swansong Album by Carcass. I just go it in the mail and I'm listening to it from start to finish.

Weird album, that. I remember getting that the day it came out. After "Heartwork" (which is still one of my 10 fave albums ever) I couldn't wait to get my ears wrapped around it.

Then... Well... I'm very interested to know what you thought of it!

Thanks, Rob! Danny is great, obviously, but Anneke is just... I love that woman.

BTW, whatever happened with Danny's band Antimatter?

Porcupine Tree - Heartattack in a Layby
one of the saddest songs i've heard

I pull off the road
East of Baldock and Ashford
Feeling for my cell
In the light from the dashboard

Hissing from the road
The smell of rain in the air con
Maybe check the news
Or just put a tape on

Lighting up a smoke
I've got this feeling inside me
Don't feel too good

If I close my eyes
And fell asleep in this layby
Would it all subside
The fever pushing the day by

Motor window wind
I could do with some fresh air
Can't breathe too well

(She waits for me. Home waits for me.)

I guess I should go now
She's waiting to make up
To tell me she's sorry
And how much she missed me
I guess I'm just burnt out
I really should slow down
I'm perfectly fine but
I just need to lie down

(We'll grow old together)

I find Swansong has more cool riffs and just blends Thrash and Groove very well with its Death Growls.

Songs like Black Star, Keep on Rotting in the Free World, Tomorrow Belongs to Nobody, and Child's Play to be some of the best songs of the album.

I think of the Album (Swansong) as a whole to be better than Heartwork. I love Michael Amott, but this album has more of what I like. It's not as fast as Heartwork, but it has some of the coolest hooks I've ever heard in a while. Plus, the bass it has some nice parts in between the solos in Keep on Rotting in the Free World.

I got the Deluxe edition, which has a dvd interview of Owen and Walker about Mike's departure, problems with the label, why they broke up, and Ken Owen's illness.

And don`t forget rock the vote! Always reminded me of Maiden...

OMG Vuk... Rediscovering Cynic atm after more than a few years... It's one of thore occasions where you feel you have grown as a listener and you hear more of the music... I 've been watching the 2007 videos in Norway with Chris Kringel who is an absolutely brilliant bassist. They had pre-recorded brutal vocals there, in this clip almost everything is live. The guitarist does a very good job with the growls, is it the same guy Tymon? I don't know the bass player here, but he does an amazing job as well. I am just realizing how much power lies behind Masvidal's calm appearance, the whole creative approach and performance is totally brilliant. Thanks for sharing.

Atm I'm listening to Bela Fleck "Throw Your Heart Down". It's stuff he recorded with various locals throughout Africa (birth place of banjo). Very cool stuff.

i have to agree. i also heard them one year ago, didn't get to me as much. but then, i again started listening them 6 months ago and i went totally mad. it's fascinating how fast the man's sense of listening music can grow..
Hovefestival? a brilliant performance. Kringel did well, nice, growling sound, but i rather prefer Shawn Malone's fretless (original member) playing. Yes, the guy with the funny hair is Tymon Kruidenier, a dutch guitarist, that actually came into Cynic along with his fellow bandmate, bassist Robin Zielhorst (the bald guy). indeed he is. as for me, masvidal is a guitar maestro, a mastermind of writing music (just read closely the lyrics from both Focus and Traced in Air!). an amazing musician and a BIG humanitarian, a man with a great heart. you might find this interview interesting (a great interview during the 2007 reunion tour after the belgrade gig).

Thanks for the interview links Vuk. I sat down and watched it, and it actually (partially) answered a question I always had about whether or not Paul and Sean contributed to the songwriting on Death's Human record. There's something about this record that was never topped by their subsequent releases, song cohesion and flow. I had asked Paul personally on Facebook but I guess he didn't have time to answer, perhaps he was a bit irritated I asked about Death and not Cynic. :)

Never heard of Cynic or Death, but just started checking out Cynic on their official page and they're great. Listened to three songs so far and they're all awesome. They have a great sense of space in their songs, lots of ringy chorus in the guitar mix, makes them sound somewhat sonic. It reminds me a little bit of Pink Floyd, the way their music is able to breathe while still being filled with great musicianship. Of course another obvious comparison would be Dream Theater. Love it. Thanks guys!
