weekend bass project: JAN 1 question and cleaning dirt

Hey guys, this weekend my SS2 will undergo a big facelift. It'll get new electronics, a brass nut, and some cleaning.

First question is: On the old warwicks, is the brass JAN1 sitting on top of anything? or is it stuck directly to the wood? If it's on something, can you post a pic showing it? I've looked for pics but can't find one.

Secondly, what is the best way to clean dirt off of the body of the bass? I haven't waxed in a while and the grain is somewhat open enough that dirt has gotten into the grain. How do I clean this out safely?

On my bass, the JAN I sits on a shim of plastic approximately 1mm thick that covers the entire footprint of the nut. The shim is glued to the headstock, and the JAN 1 is glued to the shim. The edge of the truss rod cover plate butts up against the back edge of the JAN I.

Are you replacing a JAN II? If so, the JAN II has a slightly larger footprint that affects how the truss rod cover plate butts up against the nut. Check for this.

For the dirt, a tooth brush will likely help get into the grain.

Lemon oil (fingerboard oil) is brilliant for cleaning.Just wipe it on,then off & you're clean.
 
I don't remember exactly, I think that on my 1989 Thumb the JAN1 is glued directly to the wood, but I ain't sure
 
does anybody have a picutre (of the Jan1 from the side)? I searched around on this board but couldn't find anything. I didn't have a chance to do it so the nut is still sitting on my desk.
 
thanks a lot! To be specific, I'm looking for a side angle view, as in the view of looking at the fret side markers.

I forget to mention in my previous post that if you go with a brass JAN1 it's a good idea to give the screws a turn when you change strings.Being brass,the nut is suseptible to oxidation & it gets in the threads & if left,the threads can bind.
