warwick thumb problem...

Afternoon Florin, Henry here! What I was relating to was a post from the "Official Ninja" about 16 or so posts up in this part of the forum, about the "hiss" issue he was also having! So, I'll hope to have an answer in a month or two regarding all of this, and thanks for your response. H !

I am waiting now for a clear reply if we have a known isue with the electronics in the late 90's. I will keep you posted. Thanks for telling us about these problems, you are helping us improve our instruments.

i have had my bass perfectly set up. i have had it set up several different ways, and it still gets the SAME result.

This is weird man... Really. I've seen a lot of thumbs, and did the setup for many of them. When a string is louder than other, it can mean 3 things, and pretty much only 3 things:
1 - Poor setup - the string is closer. Keep in mind that the E string has a bigger amplitude in movement than the G string, so a good setup is with the E strings with more space. You need to be sure the strings follow the neck's radius, you can set the E part of the bridge higher, and the G side lower, and then set up each pickup. Set the E part of the pickup to have a 2.5 mm spacing, and then set the other part of the pickup using your ear (ok, a screwdriver, not literary ) A fraction of mm closer to the string and it can sound a lot louder. So if the E and A string are louder, simply raise that part of the bridge or lower that part of the pickup.
Also it can be a poor setup of the bridge and saddles. All the screws should be equaly tight...
2 - bad strings. Some strings are better than others Change the strings, try other brand too.
3 - bad EQ-ing.

I still think it is the setup. You see, the thumb has slanted pickups, so you need to rely more on what you hear then what you measure. when you do the setup. Also if the lutier is using a small combo for test is not helpful either...

I know how you feel right now, and I don't want to sound arrogant. I am simply sorry that I am not your neighbour because I am 99.99% confident that this is a very easy fix for me... I know thumbs very well, and they are very well balanced basses soundwise.

Isn't there supposed to be a plate in the preamp? I can clearly see the pots, but don't see the plate?

On my thumb BO 5, there is no hiss, and all the strings play evenly.

I still think it's an electronic problem: wiring, bad pots, etc...

Several weeks ago i took this thing into my luthier, and i told him about if it could be an electronic problem. with further looking upon it, it turns out that i had a pick up that was totally dead. i got a new pick up in it, a lot more even. but the sound is still not what i am looking for. but i have actually sold it. i will be only warwickless, for a week, i have ordered in a new wick. weirdly a neck through thumb. i played one at the guitar center here, IT sounded GREAT! it is the sound i am looking for.
