warwick thumb problem...

I own a thumb BO, and i have had this problem since i have gotten this bass: i get very punchie loud low ends, but weak quiet highs and mids. and ALL of the notes on the E string are loud. and on the a d and g strings are quiet. I have tryed adjusting it, but nothing is worked. is it all thumb BO's, or just a thing with warwick?:( should i sell this bass and get the neck through???
 
Hi Josh,

Although I am a noobie, I was wondering if your problem may be that the D and G string side of your pickups are too far away from the strings? I seem to recall someone on this forum with the same problem.
 
Josh,this is definatly NOT a common thing with Warwicks,Thumbs,or any bass that I know of.But rather it's either the set-up(pickup height),strings,onboard eq.
Does by-passing the onboard eq make any difference at all?
Try putting new,or a different set of strings on.
Do a set-up,including intonation.
Let us know mate.

I have had a luthier work and set up my bass before: i told him to put the strings as low as possible without it buzzing, the strings are not the problem... i have tryed the EQ: it doesn't do anything....
 
Should i sell this bass, and get a neck through?? this is also not the first problem i have had with this bass. i have had to get it's fret board sanded and stained, and also re-fretted, i have had some issues with the tuner breaking. and i think the electronics are not warwick electronics. if i should get a warwick thumb neck through, id be nervous that it would also have the quiet or low mids and high ends. this is my first warwick, and i have some "emotional" attachments to it. but i cant keep dumping money and time on it.
 
also, if you have a thumb BO, can i see a photo of the electronics inside?

It has to be a contact problem, however, I can't help much. Tried changing the battery (I'm almost sure it's not that, but worth a shot)
 
Hey Josh,

The thumb's sound is punchy, not deep, with VERY strong low mids, almost inexistent high mids (800 - 1500), and nice growly 2.5 k presence.
For me the best sound was with the preamp bypassed, and all the controls set flat on the amp and mixer. Boosting the lows too much, or other freq can give you an inconsistent sound.

So are you boosting the lows mate?
 
i got my mids and high ends boosted on the amp. that is the settings i have always set it to. should i spend the money to get the neck through?
 
Josh I have a 2001 Thumb BO. I notice pretty much the same things you are saying. No matter where the pickups are adjusted the E string is "stronger" than all the others. I think what Florin is saying about boosted lows at the amp or even the on board tone controls can lend to exaggerate this. Whatever it is I can say I have the same experience as you. (Ive tried a few sets of strings too, med gauge black beauties right now).

Your electronics look the same as mine. Can you tell me? Crank up your amp and with the Thumb in active mode and turn the treble (on the bass) all the way up. DO you hear a little "hiss" that comes louder as the treble is turned up?

Yes, i do hear a hissing sound.
