You don't like my bowl do you. :(

Very cool, I remember seeing a guy who hunt around for old peices of wood... Just random stumps and such and carvs out some awesome furniture and bowls and other stuff... I saw this before and after picture... It was the ugliest stump I've ever seen, Covered in mud/dirt, moss, and other crap... And with a few hand tools he made a very cool bowl out of it. I believe it was a burled walnut or something. We have ALOT of black walknut tree's up here where I live, I should hunt down a stump or something and start making stuff. Maybe a burled black walknut bass body :P

I've been thinking for over a year now of building a Carl Thompson-ish bass, Similar to the rainbow bass that Les Claypool has, The body shape atleast, Not all the wood stripes :P With a 6 string broadneck... If I ever find that perfect peice of wood, it will be done!

Oh yeah, Totally forgot about that... I use to check that site out every now and then and would drool over some of those. Very few Carl Thompson basses get me "going" though :P I dont like the pickup placement on most of his basses... They look like they would get more of an upright tone. I really dig Les Claypools basses... Espically his walnut 4 string with the tremolo :D... I think he calls it the "anti-matter"? But out of all of them I would def. go for the rainbow bass :D

That's also how buckeye burl works. It's a fungus. :D

yes, but a burl is alot different from a pommele. A burl is a growth becuase of a fungus attack (kind of like a tumor). Pommele is a fungus that changes the grain but doesnt disfigure the wood.

Hey H8ER 321,

where did you get this info ?? I searched my butt off on the internet, because I like to learn more about Burls, Flames, Quilts, Spalts and Pommeles and stuff, but I couldn't find much...........I sure like to know more about it......... :D

My Father was a big time woodworker, he made tables and all that kind of stuff.

A burl can happen one of two ways.. A fungal attack or the tree could have been injured. The reason why maple burl is so abundant is from all the holes that have been drilled in the trees over the years for its syrup (mmmm maple syrup). Certin trees are more likely to get burls, depending on where they are located and what species they are.

Here is a burl:

A pommele from what I understand is when a tree gets a fungus in the the roots, It doesnt kill the tree it only changes the figure making it kind of look like a quilted pattern, but the grain has more of a wave to it. Also what makes a pommele grain varies from tree to tree, sometimes stress makes a tree have a pommele type of figure (added weight, major changes in temp).

Most interesting H8ER 321!! Didn't know that!

So to all of you with these exclusive woods:

It's nothing but a fungusy wart!

Happy slapping!

Thanks H8ER 321 !!! :D

I have to say....................that Burl looks like an abomination..........Satan taking over the tree or something............

*and suddenly burl woods went quickly out of fassion*

lol

I had a problem with Spalted Maple and Burls for this reason...............I just didn't know what exactly Pommele is..................I guess Pommele is ok, since the fungus doesn't harm the wood (whatever "harm" may be......). 8)
