I Finally Played My Vette Jazzman 5 Through A PA Board and It Sounded To Thin. Its was To Clanky. The Sound Guy Couldn't Dial In To A Sound That Wasn't To Clanky Or To Boomy. Would It Be The Pick Ups (MEC) or The Sound Guy?

Anyone Out There With A Vette JM 5 With A Good Experience?

If you went direct in, then depends on how you had your settings on bass and of course everything else was upon the sound man and his PA system IMO.
 
The Jazzman config really shouldn't sound thin? If anything, IME it can be a bit too full... I suppose it also depends on how you have it set, pickup and eq wise, but unless you are rolling all of the bass off, then it should be petty meaty IMO

If you boost the highs excessively it can get a bit harsh and glassy, but the lows should still be there?
 
I've recorded socca/calypso tracks at Dml, a popular studio over here, and that kind of music is all bottom, bass-wise. Thanks to a link from Patrik :) I switched to nickel Ghs boomers to cut the highs and bring out the bass. I recorded with the switch up in series with only a slight boost from the bass pot. I can't figure out how to make it sound good up loud but in the studio it was great with no clicking or noise. Maybe because the engineer has many gold and platinum records over his head from working with Wyclef, SWV and others and is seasoned. I have a rough touch with the bass and it was fine and I don't even play that well.
 
I Played Again Last Night. This Time I Went Through The Line Out Of My SWR Workmen Pro 2x10c and The Sound Was Distorting Through The PA's Mains. What Gives? Is It The Bass? I did Everything Possible On The Bass. I Even Pulled Down The Gain On The SWR. NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
 
Hello Omroi,

First of all you have to find the source of your troubles, by elimination. Go to your rehearsals room, and play trough your amp. Do you hear any distortion? If not, your bass is ok.
If it is distorted, try the following:
Reduce the gain, maybe you are clipping the pre.
Check your batteries, maybe they are old.
Reduce the master, maybe the final stage is distorting.

If the bass is still distorting, then it means it is the onboard eq, and you have two options, not really expensive:
1- fix it
2- replace it wit a new one. Call Dana B Goods for help.

Try to bypass the onboard eq, it should sound good. Actually IMHO, it should sount better this way.

Be careful with the eq settings, don't boost too much from a freq if you don't know EXACTLY what are you doing.
If you are not very experienced dialing a bass sound, Just keep the EQ bypassed, and tweak as little as possible the amp settings, more on the mid freq. LEave the bass alone, this is the safe way. The sound guy will know what to do :-)

I came accross some reviews saying that the FNA Jazzman was lacking low end... I know a guy who used to own one and he told me that the bass really lacked low end, it was all about mids and highs... How come ? Is it inherent to the Jazzman PU config ?

Since I fell in love with the Taranis' sound, I'm thinking of getting a CS Streamer based on the Taranis PU config (Some would call it an LX Jazzman :lol: :lol: :lol: ) ...
 
OK, well my P-nut has the same pickup config and electronics as the Jazzman, and it is seriously NOT lacking low end!

In fact it has a very deep low end and has tons of sustain... I know that the sustain is probably due to the NT, but I don't see any reason why it would have much more low end than the typical Jazzman, so maybe what you read is just one guy not knowing what he is doing/talking about? :?:

Well there is such a thing as a Streamer Jazzman, just take that, put the Taranis Pups and Pre-amp in, and voilà!
 
Does Seymore Duncan make all of the Jazzman preamps or just the ones with baseline pups? My love/hate relationship with this bass continues.
 
From what I understand, all pickups and pre-amps on current production Warwick models were from MEC...
 
I remember some models had a slap contour instead of pulling the volume knob for passive mode. :?
 
the older Jazzman models had the SD preamp, but the more recent ones have the MEC preamp
 
I guess I will start by changing out the preamp for an Aguilar. Then if that doesn't help much, I will change out the pickups. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It's the standard 3-band MEC preamp with the same MEC jazzman pickups. I actually prefer the MEC preamp to the SD one with the slap contour switch...

I just find the SD one to be a bit thin for my liking
 
My Jazzman was too thin and middy (that is mIddy... not mUddy). You could get bottom but lost punch and attack in exchange. I'm changing to Bartolini's. I use DR Lo-Rider stainless. I play heavy modern alternative rock. My ash Corvette Standard active/active is much punchier. We'll see as soon as the big MM pickup arrives from Bartolini.
 
if someone here tell me this jazzman sounds too thin, thats cause you have played too many fucking warwicks in ye life. BUT seriously, watch this, the bass sounds great in my opinion.
