I'd class any early thumb with the carved headstock a JD thumb. If you can find one, you can screw a truss plate on anything

I may have to respectfully disagree there. If it's not from the factory, it's not a JD. We gotta keep it legit...as that is a slippery slope you're on there. None of us want to be fooled. Remind me to never buy a JD Thumb from you

Nice Dazed!! You found the elusive JD 5'er! They exist! I wonder if the high gloss finish was from the factory or aftermarket?

Well, you've certainly proved there are several JD's out there for purchase right now, not just the one I thought was for sale :P I definitely was not looking on German eBay and Gumtree etc. I will from now on. Great to know. When I'm able...I'll buy from Europe if I have to.

Thanks for all the links and legwork D!!

No worries, and that wasn't even searching for them, just came across those while mooching.

My point about the truss cover was, just because someone could screw a JD plate on anything doesn't make it JD Thumb. Whereas if the headstock is carved in that way, has the tuners, bridge and slightly different pickup layout and early serial then I'd be more convinced.

Totally Dazed. And to your point....that's why there has to be a cut off somewhere, more than just the "it has a carved out headstock and proper components" therefore, essentially a JD. It would have to have all of the known features of a JD AND the truss cover. Unless it was an '85 or '86....as those are for sure JD's. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's widely accepted that the JD Thumb ended sometime in '87. Of course the carved out headstock continued until sometime in '89-'90...and those are definitely not considered JD's.

Then, you run across this 1990 fretless and gotta do a double take??

https://www.talkbass.com/threads/1990-warwick-thumb-nt-fretless-w-mono-case-shipping-included.1195746/

By all known accounts...there is no way this a JD from the factory. Even the seller has his doubts. That does look like an official JD cover though. Coming across a spare JD cover, would probably be pretty rare one would think. Very odd. Maybe it came from that White 5'er you posted earlier ;) lol

"Actually, although this one came to me with the JD plate it does not have the shorter body/ upper horn typical to the JD's....when things open up again i'll contact Warwick directly and find out what the deal is."

Possible they found a few in the factory in '90 and used em'?

Oh the mysteries!

Thanks again Dazed! I've learned some things today, for sure :) I want to discover as much as possible about my favorite Wick. I probably should have started this convo in the Thumb club.

With prices as they currently are being asked there's a chance used Warwicks will also go up in price eventually.

I don't know if anyone noticed but in the last couple of years a lot of brands have been raising prices on their "cheap" asian series to a point near 2000 euros or more, and their "built in USA/Germany/Timbuktu" relabeled "custom shop" or other shizzle plus price level raised to 4000 - 10000 euros. Prices normal people can not afford.

This of course is nothing but evil old Bob from marketing over achieving. The instruments did not get better but are just being sold as something more exclusive then what they really are.

Fender have been creating new basses and label them "1958 yaddah" and "1963 blah" in an attempt to grab a piece from the used instruments market and I now even spotted instrument series that are named "NOS" which of course is done to trick us into thinking we're dealing with new old stock. This is evil and sadly a lot of manufacturers are joining the fray.

Maybe all of this is good news for Warwick as their GPS series seem to be sensibly priced in this current market. I can't tell as I am just a stupid IT guy with no sense of commerce or marketing.

With January coming, I am very curious about where this all goes. My bet is prices will be raised bigtime as usual.

That is something I fear for the GPS series. We will know more next week.

That's OK, I don't need anymore basses, I have everything I need and want at the moment.

OK, I *might* get a new neck for the reverso if it doesn't sell, because I like the bass, and maybe I'll put a double P. So I have a spare for the buzzard.

Well, and of course I *might* need a Dolphin 5er BN whenever I get some money back, but hey, that's just a special need, right ? And I'll sell my Squier 5er for this so it's not another bass.

ANd if I get rich enough, maybe a Thumb Singlecut 5.

hahaha

I mean, just as long as you don't need anything else...it's all good :P

I offered this guy 2.000 Euro maybe two years ago. He wanted 5.500,- Euro...

So there is no listed price? Just an open ad for several years?

1986er Streamer, refinished for 700,- Euro by Warwick this year. Fixed broken neck... like always...

1.000,- Euro!

Droooool. Looks like the headstock crack happened and was fixed not too long after purchase, 30 years ago. At least that's what Google translate said HPW told the seller. Amazing looking FB.

Soon I'll be ready for a vintage Wick purchase. Either an early SS1 like this or a JD. At this price, I'd gladly pay the shipping cost to the states.

I can't tell Hardy... is this available for international shipping?

No idea, but she buys and sells here and there. That's why I think yes.

Have a look for the hw. Like new shining!

Gotcha, thanks.

Yeah, I noticed she had it refretted and neck adjustments done. I imagine when you send it in to Warwick for anything, they fully clean and detail it? 1000euro seems like an amazing price, especially after the official major tune up...crack or no crack.

That stinks. He bought the bass in summer this year, sent it to Warwick in summer and spent 700 euro, and now wants to sell for 1000 Euro? He will surely be losing serious money on this, but in any case all that effort for nothing?

And, unless I am translating wrong, Hans does not say he thinks this bass was repaired 30 years ago, he is saying in general sometimes repairs still hold up after 30 years?

Yup, he's saying that he remembers making the repair himself and he's glad to see it held up all this time.
:-)

seller is a she btw
to me everything sounds legit.
And I have not heard anything bad about her on bassic
1000 is simply a realistic starting price

Sascha is right. The seller-in () was unsure if she should send it to a luthier or directly to Warwick for an overhauling. I was one of the people who pushed her torwards Warwick. Because they had it in Markneukirchen for a refret work you can be sure the neck is o.k.. Very good offer!

Down to 900,- EUR btw...

She is indeed a she, I did not look at the sellers name and am guilty of assumption :)

I stand corrected then. Crazy price for her to sell at in that case. Realistic price for what it is, but not after the amount she has spent on it. I certainly couldn't afford to sell it at that price, I would at least keep it for a while and get some use out of it.

Can't see it lasting long at that price!
