hi all,

i have a 2002 streamer jazzman lx 4 string. With mec pickups .. not the seymour duncan ones.... i think (somebody correct me)

:P its the apple of my ears and eyes, this bass... :P

i am thinking.. if i were to change the humbucker pu's from the stock mec.. to a nordstrand version.. then i must choose the nordstrand mm4.3 rather than 4.2 to make it to work with the series/parallel/singlecoil switch?

(nothing wrong with the stock pu. its just that ...pesky upgradeitis/gas disease ....strikes again) :P

Hey Norman,

I've got a Jazzman 5 I'm looking at putting a Nordstrand in one day too. It's the 4.2 version you'll be wanting to use. The third coil in the 4.3 is a dummy coil on the back of the pickup that allows for hum free single coil operation. The MEC doesn't have this and is a two coil humbucker. You could use the 4.3 to take advantage of this, but the cavity would more than likely need to be routed a little deeper to fit that third coil under there.

The Alnico Nord should sound quite different to the ceramic MEC. I've always prefered the Alnico sound, which is why I'm planning the swap.

Hope that helps.

Berin.

here's a pic of the three coil version. It's quite a bit deeper.

hi berin,

yes, thank you, that helped a lot. ....prevented me from having to gouge my bass :P
yeah i ll go with the 4.2.

No problem.

How soon are you planning the swap? I'll be a little way off still, but would love to hear your thoughts on it when you do.

not too soon either. I will play around with the stock a little longer. Should be at least a couple months, before i place an order. Yes i will definitely post a little review once its in place. plus clips hopefully
