G'day Graham & welcome.
It sounds alot like the protection circuit is kicking in.It works by engaging the mute to let you know someone's not right.
When does it typically happen?After playing loud for long periods?Maybe the amp's over heating.

G'day Graham,
I have same amp with same problem. Just had fixed. Problem on mine was control for thermal fan faulty, so fan was not being turned on and as a result protection circuit turns mute on so no damage can be done.
