In case anyone can appreciate this....

I have decided NOT to spend money on a Rockbass and amp but instead I will save up enough money for a used Thumb NT 4 string.

I figure, since I have wanted a Thumb since about 1993 I should just save up for one. This will probably take a few months (or years)

Wish me luck! :P

you'll be glad you did. getting the bass you want is far more satisfying than just getting any bass.

I second that - the thumb is an AWESOME bass, you'll not regret it!

Thats exactly what I think...in the mean time, I'll just practice bass-lines on my classical guitar. :D

great choice about the thumb! but woudn't you save up cash for an amp first of all?

yay, thumb NT 4 string, one of thew best bass'es ever, you have made the right decision mate, you cant go wrong witha thumb NT.

Well, I don't currently own a electric bass, and I have never been good at playing riffs on an amp without one, so.....no

I have had a Thumb NT 5 since 93 and it is the only material possession I have that I would not be parted from.

You have made the right decision

On more personal note....I've owned a couple of basses before. Though I enjoyed playing them, they really weren't the sound and feel I was looking for, so they mostly went unplayed and unappreciated.

Ibanez SR400...great feel, fast thin neck, light balsa wood body, thin tone
Gibson 1973 SN Ripper...great fat/warm tone, neck dive like whoa!

Anyway, my feeling is...if you know what you really want, save up for it, its worth the wait. Anything else for me but a Thumb NT would just go unplayed and gathering dust.

Thanks everyone for the support :D , I figured y'all would understand 8)

Cheers, and feel free to keep sharing any gems of wisdom on the subject! Personal anecdotes are most welcome!

My experience was a little different. When I traded my guitar in for bass, I started on an Ibanez BTB 6-string (thin neck, good balanced tone). I added a Dean Edge fretless, but soon found the "mwah" just wasn't there. That's when i decided I need to go Warwick. I started with a Corvette Std. fretless and soon, I couldn't enjoy my Ibanez any more. It got replaced with my Corvette $$ 5-string. I think as far back as when I first researched bass guitars and traded for the Ibanez, I was attracted to the Thumb NT, but it was WAY out of reach.

It wasn't until I decided to check eBay for a used Thumb NT that my dream was able to come true. And let me say that my Thumb NT is still the one bass in my Warwick collection that I would NEVER let go of!

Save up and treat yourself right! :D

You'll love the unique sound of the thumb versus everything else you've played. It's great to be heard in a live mix. That bass just stands out, no matter your style.

Amen to that. I play(ed) in a band with two guitar players, and never got buried.

Yay!! I just deposited my first $50 into a savings account created exclusively for my soon to be had Thumb NT 4! I promise not to post here for every dollar I sock away. I just thought I'd mention that I have officially started my monetary quest for the bass I fell for nearly 20 years ago! :D

this my take awhile...

That's great news mate, well done. But wouldnt it be better to keep the money under your matress? The banks take fees, charges, taxes etc, unless you have over $5000 in the account & if you had $5000 you would be saving, but rather playing.Sorry to sound harsh mate,I just hate banks.

i know what you mean. this account is free though. the only catch is that they transfer $25 out of my checking account into my savings account every month. this is ok though since it forces me to actually put more money into the savings, and again, no fees at all. :)

I appreciate the concern though, really, banks aren't my favorite institutions either. I know, though that if I try to hide my money from myself any other way, I'll just spend it on coffee or something... :D

Good idea to have some money whisked out of your account each month... you tend not to touch it unless it's an emergency. I have £50 a month put into a GAS fund (savings account), and put in any windfalls like tax rebates (that doesn't happen very often!)... it's surprising how it adds up!

Failing that, you could just rifle through Greg's mattress while he's out!

I'd suggest going for a Bolt-on. Better balance, and about 1000 euro cheaper

But either way, Thumb NT is a lovely bass.

I always find it's best to have a good bass/guitar, that way it's easier to sound good through any amp.

+1

Sustain isn't that much of an issue, and you aren't fucked if anything happens to your neck. I'm currently about £250 into saving for a Thumb BO 5
