I hate ignorant a-holes!!!

basses will be basses, some you like some you hate.
I've played a stage I fiver with a set of frets that made it feel like I was driving a hyundai through the grand canyon, I had a FNA vette that had a neck that felt like a steel H beam...

But now I have found the love of my live, the '91 SSII fiver. I've owned sketchy fender, yamaha's etc. Tried great EB's and fled, screaming, from others...but it's still subjective.

What works for me might not work for you and vice versa...it's just sad too see/hear that some people can't share this world with one and other.

So if ever you see me getting presumptuous...please bash the living daylights out of me :D

Look at EBMM's new prototype:

Wow, a Sterling-shaped bass 5 string. What an innovation.

Dont get me wrong, I love their instruments, but their innovations are far from groundbreaking IMHO. I do think they did something right with the design of the MM humbucker. Its a truly GREAT pickup. However, stuff like adding a tone block in the middle of the bass, changing the neck joint to 5 anchors instead of 6, and making the body a slab instead of contoured isnt what I call innovation. Its just "something different." Innovation is truly groundbreaking, and none of that is.

Now, before people jump my shit, realize that I do think Warwick is much more innovative, but a big part of it is they are willing to take chances. I think Warwick is more adventurous than EBMM. That doesnt mean I dont like their instruments.

You should have noticed my " " after "innovation"

I did :D I still had to comment

Not a fan of the Sterling design, so that does nothing for me.

Its the leftover STIngray 20th Anniversary 5 string neck, LOL

I never like the shape of EBMM pickguards,I like the body wood in the picture and I've always like maple fretboards but the head stock coloration looks out of place(should be maple)I always wanted a music man bass but I haven't found one I like for a price I like.Guess I just have to keep getting Warwick's :D

Yeh... maple headstock would be much better.. what's going on there?

Cause it's a Sterling-shaped 5 string bass. The only 5 string available from EBMM are the Bongo and the Stingray... Even though the Stingray 5 is almost a Sterling, as far as it goes with electronics, it's not Sterling shaped.

It's kind of a shame though. I love EBMM Stingrays and SUBs, but I have no desire to join their forum.

I looooove my Stingray SUB, its got such a great sound! But its a shame that so many people in the EBMM Forum are that stupid..

I got flammed a bit over there for asking a simple question about adding something aftermarket. Havent posted since.

Sorry but I think that forum is pretty pathetic. Fan boys to the extreme. I remember when they came out with the blue dawn finish and how most everyone there was oohing and ahhing......

It's a different color of paint people!!! EB didn't reinvent the electric bass!

EB didn't reinvent the electric bass, NEITHER did Warwick, BUT I think that the latter tends to bring new things on the market every once in awhile... Warwick like to release new finishes, new models, new options, etc...

What if you want a Musicman custom ? Where to ask for it ? What options to choose from ?

Sterling Ball himself says there isnt enough of a market to warrant a Custom shop. NOw, I dont thik Warwick would offer it and also take a financial hit on each bass. In other words, there must be a market for it if Warwick does it. I think a CS Stingray would be kinda cool! Some mahogany in there, maybe some Pau Ferro, etc etc.

But oh nooo, if Sterling says it, it should be taken as truth. Truth is, some companies are ok being mediocre, and thats fine, everyone needs a middle line, but dont say you are the top of the line when you are the middle of the pack 8)

Warwicks feature a lot of hand crafting anyway, so a custom shop is simply an extension of the making of the standard series of basses anyway. If a custom shop would be a whole new add on for EBMM I'm guessing it means their instruments are pretty well built by machines or assembly line lab rats rather than craftsmen.

You know, after re-reading the EBMM thread originally posted here I do have to hand it to Sterling Ball. He did close that thread due to bashing of other sites and companies, including Warwick.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

Why would they bother with a custom shop anyway? All they have to do is offer a new paint color and announce it on the forum. The responses would be something like this...

"A Stingray in Baby Sh*t Yellow? When can I order one?"

"Oh my! I have to have this bass!"

"I can't believe it! I'm pinching myself."

"I'm going to sell my car to get this."

"Will you be coming out with new knobs for this bass too?"

"Big Poppa is a supreme being."

OK... Maybe a little eggagerated but not too much. Honestly, I get embarrassed for some of those people when I read that forum. ( Check out the Sterling5 prototype thread.)
Whats truely laughable is that some of them can even say that EBMM is innovative! How much have their basses changed since the 70's? What? They added another pickup and a neck screw?

I have a 96 Sterling and its a fine bass guitar however I have never felt the need to buy 7 of them and go on their forum and tell the owner how great he is.

Just did as recommended mate. Y'know what? You're right. The ONLY Warwick I know of that's not available 5 string is the Buzzard JE, cause it's what Entwistle played. And from what I recall ALL Warwicks are available leftie and fretless. There was some question about whether the 5 string Sterling would be available leftie, they didn't even ask about fretless.

I love my SUB, but that thread is ridiculous. They stick a 5 string Stingray neck on a Sterling (which they state sounds exactly like the 5 string Stringray-is there any point then?) and the forum member all wet themselves and Ball acts like he's come up with something amazing. You what I think's amazing? There wasn't a 5 string Sterling the whole frackin' time.

I think that would be pretty close actually...

In defense of Musicman

I happen to like both Musicman and Warwick. I own a Sterling HS and a Thumb BO. I think both are excellent quality. Yes, the Ernie Ball forum does have an almost hero worship of Sterling Ball. This comes from his dedication to his customers. Yes, MusicMan has very limited variety. Yes, I think the Bongo is butt-ugly -- it looks like a toilet seat at one end and a can opener at the other end. Yes, there are people on that forum that own multiple Stinrays, Bongos and Sterlings that seem to vary only in their color and that is not something that I would do. And no, I am not a fanboy, but I like their products very much. I purchased my Sterling and my Thumb based upon the basses attributes not their respective supporters in the forums. I'd wouldn't part with my Sterling HS for any similar styled bass. The same with my Thumb. They are as night and day. Both have a place.

I too get a little turned off by the worship, but I'll have to say that they really do a good job and their customer service is excellent. Sterling Ball is also very close to his customer base. He hosts an annual get together each year that is open to all. I don't know of any other forum where the owner visits it daily to be able to know his customers and be able to respond to them. Whether you like that Dargie Delight color or not, and I don't, it is what many of his customers wanted. Not having a wide variety of product does not make their basses less.

I see them as a specialty provider of Fender designed basses. They do that very, very well. The current owners of Fender have screwed up Leo's legacy. In my opinion, Musicman is as good as it gets in American made basses and Warwick is the best non USA made bass. I am glad to be able to have one from each company.

One other thought. Musicman, Warwick and Taylor are all operated by their founders. Martin is still in the family. All four have maintained high quality. Whereas, Fender, Gibson, etc. are owned by people who did create the companies.

BTW, I realize that my member name probably speaks for my loyalty. I am in the process of creating a new user name that will better reflect my love of both my Warwick and my Musicman.
