Funky Bass Question. Corvette?

Hey Warwick Brothers and Sisters. Best of the Season to all. I know it's been quite some time since I've posted but I have a question and hopefully someone out there can help me out. I'm in the market for a new fretted bass, I'm not much of a fretted player as I usually play fretless. I don't want to spend a ton of cash so I'm thinking of going with a Corvette Ash (5) BO with active pickups. What's the deal with the "Dynamic Correction" pickups? Not familiar. When I do play fretted bass I like a very funky sound because I do slap a fair bit. I spent 1 gig with a Thumb BO fretted 5 which was pretty smooth but lacking a bit of thunder down under; not sure it's the bass for me. though I love the Thumb! I need a fairly versatile bass, heavy on the funk though. So what do you think people? 8:

Dynamic correction pups are passive.
For what you describe, I would suggest the Corvette std. Bubinga active/active.
It's a juiced up J bass tone that is very tight.
The bridge pup solo gives a nice warm, buttery and bubbly burp.
 
Just registering an interest in this thread. I'm also a fretless player thinking of getting a fretted. I tried the Corvette std bubinga (fretless) a few years ago and was hugely impressed... I tried the active/active, but I'd be interested if anyone had any views on the passive version or active/passive... or anything else
 
In my opinion the Corvette STD Ash, Active is the way to go.

Nicer for funk than the Bubinga model in my opinion. Still nice and tight, but a bigger bottom end. It sounds gorgeous slapped.

hey guys, thanks for your comments. My one question though; is the babinga a darker sound then the ash? Is the ash a tighter, brighter and a more focused sounding wood?
I do like the weight of the ash bass, 3.7 kg for a 5 string. (getting old and tired y'know)
I think Luke knows what I'm getting at here, I'm going to give this bass a good slappin workout every now and then.

Bubinga is more tighter and more focused than ash. Swamp as is deep, with a nice high end. I prefer ash or maple for a full bodied funk sound, you really need to deeper lows ash gets to get that funky feeling. Ash just begs to be slapped.

The bubinga bass is darker, more growly and aggressive. Which some people prefer. It can be funky as well, but I always found it lacking the deep smooth low end of ash. Has a nice compressed slap sound though, bit like the thumb but with more lows, and less thumbish growl.

My vote goes for ash...
 
If you heard my slapping technique you'd probably realise that you're better following Luke's (and Callum's) advice rather than mine. My Corvette $$ is ash, and I think it's great, but tonally speaking I wouldn't want another ash Corvette... just like I wouldn't get another Thumb.
Sounds to me like you've pretty much decided on the ash Corvette. I think you should give one a try... but with active pickups. You may already know, but the silver "MEC" denotes passive and gold is active. Active/passive eq is another matter, though.

Active / passive does sound very sweet on my fortress, I am getting a little pickup buzz though when I'm playing active that i didn't get before, but its hardly noticable and could be partly because the pickups are so old though.
 
... and the active/passive does help that mid gig "my battery's run out" paranoia. It'll probably never happen to me... but paranoia doesn't work like that.
 
Active/Active all the way imo. Never have the battery issue, if its an important gig I just replace before hand. A battery lasts me over a year - with 3-4 hours playing a day. Although if you want a nice rounder passive tone go Passive pups and active eq, although i think spending the extra on active/actives is definitely worth it.
 
Well thanks very much for all your comments and advise guys, I appreciate it. I'm sure you'll all be happy to know that since I couldn't decide what to do after all the different opinions, I ordered them both; Ash & Babinga, active/active 5 strings; the only difference is that I ordered them both with black hardware. I'll only keep 1 but the place I'm ordering them from will easily sell whichever one I don't keep. Not sure how long it's going to take due to the black hardware request but as long as it's less then 5 months I'll be okay.
Forecast calls for a very funky springtime in Canada!

I think the ash version could be even better than bubinga for a dirty funk player.
Bubinga is very tight and articulated, and it is very good for steady, soft technique, it is very helpful with rock eights, etc.

Ash is boomier, but if you play that funky stuff it can "breathe" better than it's bubinga sister. And it is lighter too.
Of course, the bubinga one is an equally good bass for funk. But consider the ash one too.

I'd chose the active/ Active version.
