Hey Warwick peeps,
There are many players who far exceed my own ability with this technique, but I went ahead and broke down how I perform and think about double thumbing/double thumping/bidirectional slappification anyway - in HD with high quality sound :) AND, it features a sweet custom shop Warwick. Hope it helps someone!

 
Awesome insights into advanced slap technique. I remember hearing Vic Wooten say, "if you figure out a way to do this cleanly, you 'll be doing it better than me", or something along these lines. Glad to see guys doing the double thumping thing well, slap bass is advancing. Btw, I consider da Marcus the patriarch of slap bass, so I find thumb up technique more correct.

Thanks for the tutorial, Sean, I was actually working on my double thump technique so your post is highly appreciated :-)
@jester What I learned was that different techniques serve different purposes. Thumb down slapping kinda sounds more percussive and can have a better balance for straight octaves, popping with the middle finger can have a similar effect, etc, plucking the string between index and thumb can sound awesome, thumb up is great for fast slap techniques, etc. I suppose it is a good idea not to get stuck on a single technique. I am pretty sure MM can, and play in more than one way :-)

This is so great, I'm glad you guys are digging it!! It's always my pleasure to make this kind of content. Each of these videos takes somewhere between 8-10 hours of uncompensated set up, filming, and editing time - so I'm always pretty psyched when people respond well.

And like Flo said above, it's easy to fall into the mental trap of one style being "correct" and another "incorrect". I meant to mention that in the video and forgot. Each does have its benefits for sure, as far as the two styles of slapping. Look at John Ferrara from Consider the Source for a great example of well thought out and executed thumb down virtuosity. But for double thumping, I think thumbs up is the way to go :)

I have tried doublethumbing for a while but have been slapping using the thumb down technique for too long so I dropped it. In the meantime I tought myself how to play with a pick rather well so I'm using that for pulling off the faster stuff lately. Sometimes I also play with a pick because that simply works better in that particular song.

Still, doublethumb technique is very interesting!

Thank you, sir. I hear ya, it's hard to switch things up and gets harder the longer you've been doing something. I started with a pick and got pretty good on the first few years - it was like torture to go back and essentially relearn with fingers!
 
Question: what do you call this technique, and how would you spell it to search?
Double thumb, doublethumbing, double thump/ing? Trying to optimize. Thanks!
