Wood identification on my recently stripped '87 Streamer

What is the wood?

Sorry I missed that question earlier, the bass has been stripped using good old fashioned elbow grease. The guys who are stripping it (Austin Guitar Shop - UK) attempted proprietory chemical strippers painted on to the finish but the finish was so hard (possibly nitro-cellulose lacquer) that it didn't even mark the paint, so it had to be done by hand!

I'll post a few pics when I get some wax on and the true colour of the wood should come out.

theres been another guy here that tried to remove a high polish finish with a paint stripper. he didnt get very far either

If anyone is thinking of trying to strip a Warwick finish, save yourself some money and don't bother trying to use paint stripper/Nitro-Mors! Even when the top coats of lacquer were scored, the stripper wouldn't penetrate.

Well done Warwick for a very hard durable finish.
 
Well my deliberations are over I'm having my bass repainted in a see-thru amber/orange finish, possibly in a burst. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any images on the net of basses finished in this colour. I've printed a pic off the Spector site of a very nice example but I can't find a pic on the Warwick or CS site of such a finish... has anyone come across one?

you could also try this instead of getting a sunburst finish:

you can dye the body with a nice dark color several times. the dye will be sucked in the wood differently, because of the different densities in the grain.
when you dyed enough, you sand the top layer off, and you sould get that nice zebra design.

then, add linseed oil, maybe some wax, and there you go, with a beautiful design, that you probably will not see on a streamer-bass that often.

isn't that the way e.g. sandberg does that nice zebra-finish on their basses ???
(correct me if i'm wrong)



the only thing i'm not that sure about is:
i would say the darker areas of the grain are harder than the lighter areas which are softer.
and obviously soft wood will absorb more dye than hard wood.
but how to make the dark parts absorb more than the soft parts in order to enhance the grain ?

I have the body in a custom shop for final prep. I'm going up either this weekend or next to actually oversee the spraying. As the body will be sealed with a clear coat prior to the colour being applied, I have the option to have the colour removed and reapplied in a different shade if I don't like it. I'll post pics as soon as it hardened off and I think I may as well go the whole hog and purchase a new set of hardware.

Nice going - I think the orange was a great choice - it ties in nicely with the pumpkin inlays.

Great to see a bright coloured bass for a change...I actually get bored of seeing natural wood, white and black basses.

Huzzah for colour!!
 
Looks really cool, whoever did the work did a first class job there mate.
 
Cheers guys. I'm so glad that someone got the orange/pumpkin reference! I agree that colour is the way to go and the brighter the better.

I'd like to claim that I did all of the work but alas no. It was down to the Austin Guitar Shop doing the strip and the Haltwhistle Custom Shop doing the spray job. Not that I didn't trust one more than the other to do both bits but it was down to favours and circumstances. I can highly recommend both if you are in the UK (PM me if you want contact details).

Last thing is that I've dropped in a Demeter preamp and the pot shafts are too slim for the traditional MEC drilled holes, so I have to find some way of sleeving or stabilising the shafts.
 
And it's a good thing that at least the pumpkin inlays are still there :)
 
The inlays are killer :lol:

This is now one huge tone monster (the Demeter is powered by 18v and the MECs are sounding better than ever)! Can't wait to gig it tomorrow :twisted:
 
BUMP. Listening to Helloween and thinking about this bass. I considered buying it, but chickened out :D

I think someone in Romania bought it?
