Ever played a Wal? Obviously their availability is low, but being a mahogany and humbucker guy like me, you'd be in heaven...

I love mahogany and humbuckers too! I have Gibsons EB3 and Thunderbird and my Buzzard will be maple/mahogany:)

Heard all good things about Wal. Discontinued, expensive
before that happened and now priced waaaaay outa sight.
But never even smelled one. Prolly just as well, debt-wise.

Got enuf 'hog hevvin' to get by:

EBMM StingRay
GnL L2000E FL
Gibby SG Supreme [maple cap]
Hamer Frankenstein PJ [all 'hog, even the neck]
Ibnez BTB905 [ovangcal cap]
Ibnez BTB1005 FL [maple cap and back]
Yamaha Frankenstein P-type FL

The SG and L2000 are serious Olde Skoole examples of the
'hog and humbugger recipe. One's brand new and the other
is 25 yrs older but they both run true to form. The SG is just
amazing .... tiny [7.5lb], short scale, passive with little dinky
humbuggers, yet it's very dark without being muddy, and so
loud it's incredible, louder than any active bass I've got. With
a passive ax, loud is important. When you turn up a passive
bass you also turn up any electrical noise, whether RF or AC,
so having one so loud that you need to turn it down instead
of up, that is soopercool noisewise.

I hear ya. I own 3, but this topic fits them well as I'm pretty hesitant to play them beyond studio work. That and I prefer the feel of Warwicks for live shows. I suppose that makes it obvious why I'm a $$ guy...

I have the Gibby SG RI, which is almost the same, but full mahogany, so no maple cap. Maple makes it even brighter I think? This nass hasn't got the Gibson Mudbucker but ist has a TB+ pick up. In other words: It's the Thunderbird pick up and this is the version Gibson used in their LP Basses (with Warwick bridges!!!! To be still a bit on-topic).

The SG with TB+ sounds great (if you like vintage sounds) and it's more usable than the very muddy EB3.

I've played those. I like them equally to the blondie.
I got mine used. It was about $100 less than a new
red one, and looked toadally unused. If there'd been
a used red one there, I'd prolly abought that instead.

I think the maple does heat it up. And the mahogany
is different species, "limba wood", which IIRC is also
called "black mahogany". My gut feeling is that maple
on limba sounds somewhere between swamp ash and
mahogany. Coolth. I'd be a happy camper if the only
known tone woods were swamp ash and mahogany.

With 3 on hand, clearly you dig the SG reissue. But I can't
see fearing to gig them. Gibby was doing their "collectible
of the week" routine that year. Maybe still doing it, haven't
checked. To me that means we were offered a whole mess
of inneressing variations on basses and geetahs that year,
but it also means I can't take anything from that period of
marketing madness as a serious investment grade limited
edition collectible with real expectations of future value. It
hit me more like the Franklin Mint scene, but I just happen
to really dig this "small ax" and got an affordable deal. I'm
not gonna try to convince you to go hammer them on gigs,
cuz if I'm wrong thaz bad karma to change someone else's
path .... but for myself, I can live with my approach.

`

LTD's as main axes? HELL YEAH! My Custom Shop Streamer Stage 1 is my main set axe, but i use my FNA Jazzman LTD 2004 as my slap bass.... If you have ever cought a Fusebox Funk show, you would see that i use at least two basses at every show....CS SS1 and LTD 2004. Some shows i will use a few other basses, depending on what we are doing. This sat i will be using the SS1 and the LTD 2004 and my new found Streamette 4! :)

I got my Dirty Blonde used at a great price, but I always buy my basses to play. I "collect" Warwicks, but I don't store them away! They are meant to be played! :D

I would gig my bleached blonde,I would just bring it in a good case and put it away and make sure it was in a safe place when I was done. You hear so many horror sotries about instrument's getting knocked over on stage when they were left on stands.

i dont have a LTD bass but i think that any bass can be used as a main bass.

ive had my $$ vette for almost a year now and if you where to come up 2 it and inspect it, i could probably garantee that you couldnt find a mark or ding (excluding the 2 tiny dings from when i was gettin out of the habit of throwing my strap over my shoulder, 2 tiny straplock inprints)
and anyway, they have that technique to get dings out with a damp clothe and soldering iron (must get round 2 that)

but i really like your "artworks" on the wall Warwickhunt, they are truely masterpieces

................ was wondering if it was worth it to make a limited edition
bass a main bass. One part of me says that it is a LE therefore I must
preserve its value by shielding it from normal playing wear and tears,
but another part says its an instrument after all, so I should just play it
if it fits me. I never do any hard gigging ..............

anyone play a LE for a main bass?
`

I don't own anything unless I found it as a decent bargain. Guess
you could say my taste overreaches my wallet :-/

Lezzeee .... got a 30th anniversary StingRay. Brand new it cost me
$200 less than a stock base model StingRay, but there is still that
'problem' of it possibly being currently worth a lot more than I paid,
and very likely a whole lot more in the future.

OK. I have no problem buying an ax for $200 under the base model
and being lucky enuf to get a few special features thrown in for free.
Some are functional features and some are cosmetic. OK OK OK now
for the REALITY CHECK: If I'd bought it to flip for profit, even if it has
to live in the closet whilst its value appreciates, then I would not find
myself asking your question. I would NEVER gig it, cuz I'd not be its
player ..... I'd be its currator, its caretaker.

OTOH, since I bought it, as a bargain, to PLAY like the cool ax it is, I
have no problem playing it. It is not only very beautiful, but is also
irreplaceable, being the ONLY mahogany model MM ever offered. If
something happens to it, I wanna be glad for the good times we had
together, not mourning that it spent 10 years unplayed under a bed
until the house burned down. In such a scenario, the tragedy is not
the fine bass that was "neglected" for 10 yrs. Believe it or not, your
basses have absolutely no feelings whatsoever. They are innanmate
objects. The tragedy would be about me, as the paid-up owner, who
deprived myself of 10 years enjoyment playing it, until the house
burned down. And I loooooves to play and hear mahogany :-)

I would say, about your question, that it matters not only what you'll
pay for this Ltd Ed, but whether the Ltd Ed is strictly a cosmetic, and
perhaps commemerative or sooper-star-image package, OR whether
it features some functional aspects that you value, and that are not
otherwise available from the maker
. If it is strictly cosmetics, and you
pay the inflated price for the Ltd Ed just for unique appearances, then
do put it in the closet and hope your speculative investment turns you
a decent profit. OTOH, if it's got features that matter to you and your
music, features unavailable for less than the Ltd Ed surcharge, then buy
it if the features make you happy enuf to pay the price, and then play it
..... or you've wasted the price of the features.

BTW, my 30th Anniversary StingRay is already worth less than its
siblings that owners have stashed under their beds: It lacks a "30th
Anniversary" case, cuz it was verrry fancy, but much too heavy, more
expensive, and less functional, than a standard molded bass case. It
also lacks its Ltd Ed pickguard, cuz I prefer tortise shell to black. It's
not that I don't care at all about cosmetics ...... just that I won't pay
thru the nose for a strictly cosmetic "collectible" version of anything.
And I didn't even hafta buy that torty PG !

`

that 30th Stingray is extremely easy to find still, the prices on them have dropped through the floor, and did I mention the abundance of them out there?

It wont be a high value bass like many of the others already are for a LONG time. i sold mine for what I bought it for, and I bought it for what a regular stingray would go for used, so thats sayin something.

My $$ is scratched, ALOT, I don't even know how I get them, I'll take it out of my case and its scratched, I'll hang it on my wall and the next morning there are scratches, I have a scratch monster, ohh and my band teacher slammed it into a wall, put like a 1/8 inch gouge in it, I was really really pissed, Now I wish that I got it in a different color, because if they were on a natural color, I wouldn't be able to see them, its just that mine is Nirvana black and the colors contrast

My main two gigging basses for over a year were my two 4-string LTDs. One got knocked over once, but she was unharmed. Still, I was ready to kill the drunk guy who knocked it over....

I do not play his as my main axe but I am looking for a new owner for this:

This has been my main gigging bass for about 15 years and I'd say the main problem you have with gigging a Ltd instrument is that you have to treat everybody else as an idiot and a prospective candidate for damaging your property

That way when you finish playing at a gig you put it away and don't leave it for the 'idiots' to knock over/off its stand! It will pick up knocks and dings but it will also change nicely in colour and I think this adds character... or Mojo

The plating has worn off the controls and hardware and the pups are scoured but all in all not bad for 17 years old and gigged most weekends for that period (+rehearsals and house use)

Forgive my ignorance but what bass is this? it's awesome!! (clearly it,s a Corvette variant)

It's an amazing F-hole Corvette. The predesessor to the Infinity NT from 1999 iirc.
It's one the most unique Warwicks ever.A true collectors piece.

Does that have a contoured body?

Is it NT or BO?

Reminds me of the Streamette, cept this one is even better!!
