I don't own anything unless I found it as a decent bargain. Guess

Lezzeee .... got a 30th anniversary StingRay. Brand new it cost me
$200
less than a stock base model StingRay, but there is still that
'problem' of it possibly being currently worth a lot more than I paid,
and very likely a whole lot more in the future.
OK. I have no problem buying an ax for $200 under the base model
and being lucky enuf to get a few special features thrown in for free.
Some are functional features and some are cosmetic. OK OK OK now
for the
REALITY CHECK: If I'd bought it to flip for profit, even if it has
to live in the closet whilst its value appreciates, then I would not find
myself asking your question. I would NEVER gig it, cuz I'd not be its
player ..... I'd be its currator, its caretaker.
OTOH, since I bought it, as a bargain, to PLAY like the cool ax it is, I
have no problem playing it. It is not only very beautiful, but is also
irreplaceable, being the ONLY mahogany model MM ever offered. If
something happens to it, I wanna be glad for the good times we had
together, not mourning that it spent 10 years unplayed under a bed
until the house burned down. In such a scenario, the tragedy is not
the fine bass that was "neglected" for 10 yrs. Believe it or not, your
basses have absolutely no feelings whatsoever. They are innanmate
objects. The tragedy would be about me, as the paid-up owner, who
deprived myself of 10 years enjoyment playing it, until the house
burned down. And I loooooves to play and hear mahogany
I would say, about your question, that it matters not only what you'll
pay for this Ltd Ed, but whether the Ltd Ed is strictly a cosmetic, and
perhaps commemerative or sooper-star-image package,
OR whether
it features some functional aspects that you value,
and that are not
otherwise available from the maker. If it is strictly cosmetics, and you
pay the inflated price for the Ltd Ed just for unique appearances, then
do put it in the closet and hope your speculative investment turns you
a decent profit. OTOH, if it's got features that matter to you and your
music,
features unavailable for less than the Ltd Ed surcharge, then buy
it if the features make you
happy enuf to pay the price, and then play it
..... or you've wasted the price of the features.
BTW, my 30th Anniversary StingRay is already worth less than its
siblings that owners have stashed under their beds: It lacks a "30th
Anniversary" case, cuz it was verrry fancy, but much too heavy, more
expensive, and
less functional, than a standard molded bass case. It
also lacks its Ltd Ed pickguard, cuz I prefer tortise shell to black. It's
not that I don't care at all about cosmetics ...... just that I won't pay
thru the nose for a strictly cosmetic "collectible" version of
anything.

I never do any hard gigging, its either just jamming with friends or my jazz band concerts, so I dont have to worry about the mic stand taking a chunk out of the neck back or something
