I think, i could be wrong, but it was originally intended to be a mainly slap style bass the other word for slap is thumb. So i think that that is where the name comes from. Maybe :lol:

the thumb was called jd thumb and was so much i know, it was at first a signature bass for a guy named john davis (jd). there are not so much information bout this guy....
this guys was like kyle said into slapping und a the jd thumb became a standart at 1988 and named it since then thumb bass because it gets so famous.

it defenatly has to do with slap. im pretty sure they call it the Thumb bass because the body is angled in a way so that when you play sitting down (or maybe even standing up) its easier to slap/pop

I am not sure, but I also think that the Thumb has got it's name to emphasize it's slapping qualities...

What a great, knowlegeable resource we have here in the people of this forum--thank you all! I asked a professional bassist and teacher in this area who owns a Thumb bass given to him by Jack Bruce-( long story) -and he didn't know! Perhaps if I practice enough I will be able to justify an investment in a Thumb bass, but I'll keep shredding my fingers on my Corvette until then.

I also think it has to do with slapping, but I also agree with Martin: I always think of the sign people make if they mean they're going to call someone by telephone. Thumb and little finger up, index, ring and middle fingers down.

Thumb bass - origin of the name

Hi Greg,

Thanks for educating us all. It is a dream of mine (like many, many others-I'm sure) to own one of these one day. A most remarkable instrument! It's truly a joy to be a member of this forum.

Did they change their bodyshape in the last 10 years though or are there different current versions of them? Looking at some pictures in the custom shop gallery, as well as a few owner pictures here and on TB and it seems some thumb NT's have deeper, more pronounced cutaway's then others.

Yes, we changed the shape several times Anyway, untill 89 or something they were 100% hand made, so there are not two identical thumbs from that time...

Hm, What era is that custom shop with the deeper cutaway made from?(one pictured is a new one from musiciansfriend, which looks like mine which is a 2001 model).
