While viewing the end of Slipknot's Disasterpiece dvd I couldnt help but cringe as Paul Gray proceeded to violently smash his Thumb bass over and over through one of the drum heads and then leave it there like yesterdays garbage....aahhh! Makes me kinda glad he switched to Ibanez so that kind of treatment will be more justified :lol:

True... But still kinda sad. I personally also think that it's bit provocative - some people would give a foot for a Thumb bass! U know what I mean... Of course it's his money, but still... I would never brake ANY of my basses, out of respect to the bass, the builder and the guy/girl who can't afford the gear I'm priviliged enough to be playing with....

It would be a very long debate ( pro and con. ) about those kind of "situations"...so in my opinion...the most of us 
live in a free democratic countrys and as long he's not putting anybody's life in danger he can smash it, hug it, play it...do to the bass what ever he likes...as I said before...
...the fact that maybe he didn't bought it by him self for his money isn't relevant as long as the bass is his legal possesion...

1/ he doesn't really smash his Thumb. He just tries to destroy the drum skin with it. The Thumb might get some dings and a bot of wear doing this, but he doesn't smash it literally.
2/ Ibanez are doing extreemely good basses, for the price. Don't bash on that brand please. We all love Warwick for sure, but it's not fair to criticize other brands, that make good basses.

I honestly don't care whether or not he bought or whether or not Warwick gave it to him, as luthier spent a considerable amount of time to craft it and precious woods were used! Why the hell would you want to purposely destroy something like that? I remember ten or so years ago seing a Porsche dropped from a crane as part of a radio contest! WTF?!?! It's disrespectful!

I really like Paul's playing and sound. He's a good player, no matter what people might think. If you listen to Slipknot's first CD (their best album), the self-titled with the complete line-up, he's got a really growly sound. The guitars are sooo in the mids that he's standing out of the songs really well.

well, i wouldn't ever smash an instrument !
every instrument is unique:
- it's set up perfect because you played it for a long time, searching for the best way to set it up
- it's got stories to tell (like forest gump's shoes)
plus: why smash such a beautiful thing ??
seeing a nice instrument beeing smashed does feel odd. maybe i wouldn't wince seeing a mass production factory-bass (made of agathis or other frequent cheap woods), but i would call it a horror movie, seeing basses being smashed, that are built by real humans, who love what they do, and therefore use only the finest ingredients.
(for the luthier, it must feel like watching his ex-girlfriend fuck another guy)
but like i said: it's just my opinion. slipknot doesn't behave in a shocking way since yesterday, so it's not very surprising, is it ?
perhaps some would call it a horror to see mojoed instruments (thinking: why doesn't the owner take care of his instrument).
you see, it's like the german saying:
"opinions are like buttholes: everyone's got his own"
and that makes the whole thing run the risk of being an endless discussion (like diabq said before)

I do have to agree that it is anyone's right to do whatever he or she wants to do with it as long as you don't harm anyone else...............However, there is also the "responsibility" towards nature........The woods used for any bass used to be a tree..............and it took many many years for the tree to grow. Sustainable use of natural resoures is an important topic for everyone, and it is also anyone's right to dislike/disapprove smashing up instruments. :wink:

He's there to put on a show for the fans, so in my opinion if you have the money and feel smashing your instrument will improve the stage show for whatever reason then feel free. I still wouldn't though as not my image and I have to pay for everything

sadly not warwick users, but honestly i think his F*nder fits the music they play well. i think the growl of a W would be a little much. sure he could use a 'wick and tone the growl down, but what fun is that?

I gotta agree... It's VERY moronic to destroy an instrument... Even if it's a cheapie little Squire. I would much rather hand the instrument to someone who wants to learn to play it rather than destroy it or smash it up.
