URGENT! Streamer S-I w/non-original truss rod: Y or N?

Something has been changed!

A 92 Streamer should have the controls that were described earlier in the thread. You can return it to the original controls as they should be available from Warwick or keep your eye on eBay.

Don't worry though... if it sounds good just play it for now :D

Yes... I opened the thing (can't find the english words, sometimes :-)) on the back, everything seems in a pretty bad shape, it seems like wires have been messed up. Upon all these wires and stuff there is a soak and the battery is on the soak. Nothing Warwicklike... The bass actually plays good, but how much do you think I'll have to pay, and what should I buy exactly, to have everything as it should be? Should I post some pictures of that "electric funeral"?

Mmmh... I messed with the pots and they are: volume p-pickup, tone p-pickup, volume j-pickup, tone j-pickup. The tones only clearly affect the sound at the end of the run, and they are cut only. They act exactly as a Fender tone knob. This is weird.

How do I know if there is still something original in the electronics of the bass? Well, I'm a little upset, not too much because the woods seem pretty good, and the sound is good as well. But I know myself, I won't have rest until I replace everything with the right parts.

I wrote an email to the guy, he says the electronics have not been touched (they only were taken off and then put back on the bass once, when he sanded the bass some years ago). He says that he thinks that the push/pull pot was introduced on Warwicks later, in 2000 or something, and that in 1992 there was not. Could it be that he bought the bass second hand, and the previous owner changed something? The guy seems honest...

If ya take the bass outside in the daylight & hold it so you can see along the edges of the fingerboard & where the neck meets the body.If the boards been lifted you'll most likely see evidence of it.

My board was lifted on my thumb but there's absolutley no evidence of it what so ever.

It depends on the luthier I guess.

I played a Thumb in original shape from 91', and it had a passive pull/push volume knob, that's a feature they've had for a long time.

Yes, you guys are right. I wrote to the Warwick customer support, told them the serial of my bass to know if it was an "experiment" or what, and they confirmed that electronics were modified "in a very unusual way", Gregory Pasquet said; he also said the Streamer Stage always had 3 ways electronics. Warwick answered very fast, the customer care seems the same (high!!!) level as their lovely basses! :-)

So, given that I think I have no chance to get some of my money back for this reason, it's time to start looking for Mec 3 way electronic! In the meantime, I'll play the baby, it really sounds good anyway, very very funky, round, clear, powerful... maybe I'll keep everything like this! I followed your advices for the cleaning of frets, fretboard and body, and bassoctopus: what a tone with new strings! Love it!

If anybody knows a place were I can eventually buy Mec electronics, plese tell me! I'll take a look on Ebay...

Again, thank you!

I'm sure that Warwick were trying to be helpful to a customer but a 92 Streamer bass would not have normally had a 3 band EQ, that came later (mid 90's) and Streamer basses from about late 88 (definitely 89) onwards would have had a push/pull active/passive volume control. No disrespect intended to Warwick Customer Services but I'd say that if they are indeed saying that the active/passive knob came in circa 2000 then they need to employ someone who knows about the history of Warwick basses, This is the second time in 2 weeks that I have heard of someone quoting Warwick HQ as a source of misinformation.

I have also never heard of a factory/stock Streamer that had 2 volumes... possibly a custom order but NOT bought off the shelf that way. A photograph of the internal wiring would be helpful. However I'd say that it is safe to say that someone has tampered with the bass in the past!

eBay or this forum is about your best bet for a replacement set of electronics. I have a 3 control set from a Thumb bass available but not a 4 pot from the Streamer range, sorry.

You could replace the whole internals with a different manufacturer as there are lots of options available. However I can appreciate that getting the original MEC circuit would 'probably' be best.

Warwickhunt, sorry, I think I caused a misunderstanding, it was not Warwick who told me the active/passive knob came in 2000, he was the guy who sold me the bass!

Instead, was the Warwick guy who said the Streamer has a 3 way eq, and that is wrong...

I agree with you that I might consider buying non-Mec electronics, as long as it sounds... well, did I already say "funky"?
It would also be easier, I might find Bartolini or Emg or Aguilar here in Rome (Mec I don't think so, I should order from Warwick shop). I'll go and check asap.

I have another naif question: my pickups active, aren't they?

On the link below there is a picture of the electronics, I hope you will be enlightened! :-)

Thanx!

I agree with Warwickhunt, definitely not Warwick electronics.

And hopefully you can wire it up.

It's still going to be a really nice bass for the money - €1150 is still a good price for a vintage SS1, but I'd try and get compromise and get €100 back from the seller.

Hopefully someone who knows better than me can confirm that these are the right parts - maybe speak to Warwick themselves

Thank you so much bassoctopus! I agree with you, I'm still happy with my bass despite the electronic issue... I don't think I'm getting any money from the guy, but I will survive (and he will make a macumba expressly for him!).

Do you think I might me able to mount the new electronics by myself? My luthier lives far away (in another town, near were I once lived) and I don't like to leave my instruments to someone I don't know. Is there any reasonably understandable "how-to" in these electronics boxes? Jesus, how many questions have I made in this thread? Sorry!

You can also order MEC parts through Banzai Music

The 3-way active circuit you're looking for is either this 9V:

Or even better, this 18V, for more headroom:

Both sell for €165.41
The Warwick Shop sells these for €212.00 and have a flat shipping fee of €95.00 - WAY too much compared to Banzai Music.

You will also need one stacked knob for this system:

Price is €3.99.

And you will probably want to put three new single dome knobs to match:

These sell for €2.38 each.

Banzai Music is located in Berlin, Germany, they usually have these parts in stock, and their prices and shipping are far cheaper than the Warwick Shop...

From the picture it looks like it's pre-soldered, so it might not be too difficult. I'd have a look at the instructions when it arrives and make the decision then.

BTW I'd go for the 2 way circuit - it's what the bass should have come with, and for my personally I prefer the 2 way on my thumb to the 3 way on my Infinity. But that's up to you!

Done! Amazing prices, i like those guys! :-)

It really was not the right time to spend more money on my addiction, but... well, if you are reading this you understand me!

Neil, I went for a three way in the end, I often feel the need to play around with my mids (I think it's a matter of frequencies that hurt my ears somewhere in the mid range). I made a kind of nice Frankenstein, with a vintage body and the heart of a brand new SSI... let's see what happens!

I'm deep into waxing right now, my babies look so healthy!

Wow! I just saw I became a Warwick Enthusiast! Not a newbie anymore! Sounds cool! 8)

Aehmmm... well, I have another doubt!

It is related with english terms and expressions... there are different finishes for basses: oil finished, coloured oil finished, satin finished... Well, what finish is my SSI? It may sound ridicolous, but I don't know the exact meanings of these expressions. Is my bass natural oil finished? Should I post some more pics?

I'm asking because I've seen some dark zones (a little bit darker than the wood) here and there on the maple, and I'd like to find out if I can do something about it, and if there is some product I DON'T have to use on this kind of finish... I don't really worry about the look of the instrument, it is vintage, it is alright... just wondering if wood may get "sick", and start somehow degrading.
