The value of old Thunderbird basses is raising.
You need a lot of money to but an early 4001 Rickenbacker, or a 1976-1979 Stingray.
 
I found a really nice 1978 Stingray here for $3000AU.All original too.
For that era,they were possibly the best production bass available.
 
me thinks you can't go wrong with either one. try and get a deal on the 89, and if it's too pricey, you've still got the newer one to fall back on. poor guy. what a dilemma!
 
I just helped a friend sell his 1990 and it was an amazing bass. veery low mids and lows focused. less highs as the newer ones. I did not keep it because it was a 4 stringer and I play 5ers. Otto07 bought it and he is in love with it.

that one did have the MECs. i do not know how it would sound with the EMGs but I guess you can do a swap and get the MEC tone with Wics that sounds so awesome.

True, I've forgot that the reverse TBird are getting a little pricey. But, a old 4001 Ric or a pre EB MM won't go in the 5 numbers and I don't think they will soon, maybe in 10 years or so.
 
So I went for a 2001. one! There are lot of reasons and none of them are influenced by the price of the instrument. So now I'm a proud owner of Thumb NT 4 (2001.), thou there is a lot of work to be done. Neck looks like a bow and who knows when was last time cleaned or waxed.
