thumb bo pickup change question

Hi all.

I'm new here. I own a 4 string thumb BO for 3 years. I'm not quite happy with the sound of my bass. There is plenty of highs and not enough high-mids in my opinion. Tweaking the knobs doesn't help much... :( So I've started to think about changing the pickups. Would changing the pickups help? Which ones could help to improve high-mids???

Hey, welcome to the forum!

I'd change the elctronics if I were you. The Thumb BO has 2-band electronics. You might consider upgrading to 3-band electronics to have more control over your sound. If you want electronics that give you an advanced control over your mids check out the Noll TCM 3PM electronics.



They even come in a pot configuration that would fit to a thumb (B2026).

What about pickups then? I use BOSS GT6-B, so I have plenty of EQ options.
The problem is the sound coming from the bass itself, high-mids are just not there... I thought changing the pups might help. Any suggestions?

The electronics affect the sound of your bass, they are not transparent. Put an Aguilar OBP-3.
 
BTW check it out also without the GT6, and with another amp - what you don't like ccould be anything. If you try everything and you are sure it's the bass, I'd change the electronics to an OBP-3 first and then look at pickups.
 
Dude,I'd take it to a professional before changing anything.It makes more sense to locate the cause of the problem rather than just swapping over components hoping for the best,less expensive too. :wink:
 
What kind of strings have you been using?

I used DR Hi-Beams on my BO4 then went to Fat Beams & Lo Riders to get a little more low end growl.

What do you prefer between the to Fat Beams & Lo Riders. I have been using Fat Beams only on my $$ since I've tried them...

Thanks for all the advices, guys.

I've been using Warwick Red Label strings (40'). I tried many different kinds of strings and I find Red Label quite good. They are cheap too :P
I know, probably most of you smiled reading this, but I really like Red Label.
I think I'll just go for NOLL... I like the idea of having parametric EQ onboard.

Jay,

You can make a good case for either string, but I right now I think I like the Fat Beams better. Lo Riders have a hex core that feels just a little stiffer, and I'm afraid as time goes on it might feel too stiff.

Fat Beams, on the other hand have a round core like the Hi Beams, and they sound great for months on end. And I play in some pretty humid venues during the spring & summer months.
