Swapping necks on my Corvettes

From a first glance I think both basses will look absolutely awesome after the switch. Black board + black hardware on the $$ and brownish board on brown body wood on the std.
Tone wise the fretless will be very interesting (ash + $$), I think gawlem would agree here. :)

How could Gawlem not agree ?

One of my projects-in-mind right now is to
double up on my Ash-$$-FL situation. At the
moment, my Vetts are:

  1. Ash $$ fretted
  2. Ash $$ FL
  3. Bub' JJ FL ---- with wenge neck ['99]
  4. Bub' JJ-piezo FL
.... but I'm athinkin to remix necks for:

  1. Ash $$ FL
  2. Ash $$ FL ---- with wenge neck ['07/'99]
  3. Bub' JJ fretted [new neck, on '99 Vett]
  4. Bub' JJ-piezo FL

Bassically, just a neck swap between
basses number '2' and '3'. The piezo
JJ FL has an ovangcal neck. While it's
tempting to fantasize about hearing
a wenge neck thru the piezo, that ax
is so perfect just as it is, I just hafta
declare it off-limits in the remix. I'll
even take this op to once again thank
Nathan [vpshockwave] for this bass.

I've just about got my nerve up to execute this "procedure"! I should be starting on it sometime in the next 24 hrs.

It just occurred to me that I'll want to swap some hardware too so it all matches. Are there any pitfalls to look out for in removing and re-installing the bridge/tail piece assemblies?

I've had the bridge and tail fully off,
but never swapped them. Since the
bridge has the 4 leveling screws, I
figger even if there's "production
variation" in the routing work, s'no
biggie to adjust. Don't spill all the
saddles outa the bridge. It's not a
disaster, just a tedious distraction.

Thaz pretty much my plan as well,
cuz it's easier than swapping tuners.
OTOH, you got 3-knob vs 4-knob so
you gotta buy a knob. I mean, the
knobs gotta follow the bridge, yah ?
And silver paint for the toggles ....

Sometimes I tell myselves I got too
much othern schidt to take care of,
and I bought both of the neck swap
candidates face-to-face retail, so I'd
played them and dug them, so why
fuggaround ? Then the "cuz I can"
answer keeps cropping up .....

golem...this is why I keep running these things by you guys on the forum. dumb dumb me didn't even yet think about the 3 vs 4 knob issue. duh...guess I'll leave the black hardware on the $$, for now at least... I will swap the tuners though. I've done that and don't see it as a biggie.

Please do, they look great with the big black humbuggers and the blonde ash.
And add a black fretless neck while you 're at it :).
 
oh, it's quite possible I may leave the hardware all mixed up too...i kinda like that idea..plus it appeals to my laziness! my "main" axe, the 5 string corvette has one black tuner amongst 4 other chrome ones, and it doesn't bother me a bit, in fact it reminds me that this axe is mine.
 
The necks are off...here's a few pictures. Note that the neck from the $$ has a name and a date, and the pocket of the same bass also has a stamp and a triangle hand written over the stamp. The neck from the FL does not have these features...hmmmm.:?:

With the necks off I took the opportunity to clean up the wax build-up and wax the small areas normally covered by the end of the finger/fret boards. I couldn't help but think of Tyler while I did this!

Well - I'm disappointed. The screw holes did not line up, so I aborted the procedure and restored the 2 basses to their original configuration. damn!:((

Thanks to all that lent their advice. I was really hoping this would work out, but it was not meant to be.

Ya know Gerry,if ya had your heart set on this there is another way.If the neck pockets are a snug fit & it's only the screw holes out of alignment you can plug the existing holes & re-drill,although I wouldnt reccomend it if you're not confident or experienced with some wood working skills.I can help you out with a certain amount of instruction & there's another Gerry here that's a carpenter by trade who might also help.

No worries mate.
Basically,all you have to do is glue some dowel(thin rods of wood) into the existing holes in the neck pocket,then re-drill the neck pattern for the new necks ;)
 
SOrry man, I told you we drill the holes manually...
 
how far off are the holes,and do any line up at all.I swaped the necks between my vett and std streamer,I just drilled new mounting holes.And both necks went on fine.If the old holes and where the new ones would go have a little meat between them there shouldn't be a problem.But if they just touch then you would have to do like greg said and fill the old holes.

I love the Frankenstein looks of my Yamaha
with the mix of gold, chrome, and black. It's
got a black epoxied FB as well, and the head
stock has a veneer that used to match some
other body. So it's got sycamore, mahogany,
black epoxy, and hardware in gold, chrome,
and black. BTW it sounds as cool as it looks !
