dude, do you use the stainless steel xl's or the nickels??? i saw a cheap pair of the stainless steel in my local music shop today so might go and try them out!

Nickel D'Addario XL.
When I want Stainless Steel, I switch to Warwick Black Label
 
i went for some black labels! and i have to say they growl like an untamed beast!!
i have boiled and cleaned my old strings. and shoved em on my first peavey bass.. they still sound ok ish.
do any of you guys re use your strings i.e. boil em clean em etc??

I found that an alcohol bath its better than boiling the strings.

But the most important thing is playing with your hands clean, and cleaning the strings with a cloth when yiu stop playing.
This increases strings' life

Bath of alcohol?? what alcohol do you use?? i had heard of doing this before but did not try it as i did not know exactly what to use in the form of alcohol!!

well every set of strigns have their own distinct sound like every differnt brand of bass. so growl to me means the best sound i can achieve out of my warwick, using a certain brand of those "growling" strings. e.g. i tried out some dadi pro electrical strings as a joke on my warwick and they actually sounded awful whack some black labels and the growl was back!
hmm i used the word growl a lot! ah well..
 
I use Rotosound 105-45, 3 years on and i won't use anything else.
 
I've been using D'addario's XL nickels on both my basses and have loved the tone. However I used to love the tone of TI flats I once had on a P bass and have been wondering whether to try them out on my Thumb, Has anybody here strung flats on a Warwick?
 
I put Elixir`s on my Vampyre a few weeks ago, and it`s never sounded that well before. It`s more crisp and distinct than ever. Black Labels, and especially Rotosound, were disappointing, at least for a whole step down-tuning.

A common pure alcohol, which for sure you already have and use at home.
Plunge your strings in some alcohol for a couple of hours, and they will aound (almost... :wink: ) like new!
 
I suspect that around here your "pure alcohol" is called surgical spirit - smells like a hospital! Stick your hands in as well and you'll be able to bang in nails with your fist! (no - seriously, don't try this at home, kids!)

I leave my strings on as long as I can - I don't for the boiling thing, but sometimes I put them on "lesser" basses - like a hand-me-down!
 
I usually boil my DRs once and they become like new. don't try this with coated strings though :wink:
 
I only use Warwick Red Label, best damn strings I've ever used that doesn't cost alot :D

I was exactly like you. In fact I use Rotosounds on all of my basses, including my 5 string headless and acoustic.

But I've decided to experiment with other strings and other materials. I do prefer the stainless steel over nickels and nickel plateds, but I've only tried a few manufactuers.

I've got GHS Boomers 105-45 on mine at the moment. They're nice, the nickel definately gives it a nice smooth feel. But we shall see how long the tone lasts (one of the reasons I prefer stainless steel).

But IMO, Rotosounds enhance the Warwick growl, because the strings just add even bite to them.
 
Rotosound is a great string. I used them for years on P-Basses and Jazz Basses. I'd been using DR's for about 3 years on my Thumb BO but decided to put Rotosounds on my Thumb NT5. They're a little coarse when it comes to sliding, but the tone is incredible. Yes they sure do growl!

how much $ does DR marcus miller & DR black beauties costs?

i just use brands they ususlly sell on regular music stores like earni balls & fenders, and you are right, they dont realy last long. so any info from you will be great.

Yep Jay, that price sounds about right. I don't know what Black Beauties are going for.
