Streamer - New vs. Old?

Yoes! Nowadays I'm thinking of buying an SS1 4string, love the looks, and from what I can tell of jamiroquai and youtube, also the sound. But of some strange reason I seem to prefer the older ones, like one from 92'.. But I have no idea of why! Can't see any bigger difference between the 90's ones and the nowadays ones. It's got MEC and all, so what's the difference? Is it the wood in the neck or what? Is approximately 910€ a good price for a 92' SS1 4str?
 
early streamers had wenge stripes in the neck laminates, newer streamers have 3 laminates of flame maple in the neck.
don't know when they made the switch.

on the back of the nut, newer streamers have a bead (is it the right word ?), while older streamers don't have it.

but the most important thing: old instruments FEEL different than new ones.
they feel worn it, they feel played, while new instruments feel new.
it sounds stupid, but if you played an old instrument, you will be able to tell the difference.

just check it out what you like most. if you can't compare, then just take what's cheaper i would say.

under 1000 euros for an SSI is a good price.
i saw a 5-string SSI sell for 1900 euros on german ebay. and it was used.

Sweet. Don't know if I prefer a worn in bass or a new.. Probably a waxed new one with fresh strings :P Oh by the way, I noticed that the old ones have a large W on the bridge, when did they stop making such bridges? Look awesome.

Do you mean the Volute on the back of the neck, below the nut? They began adding those around '97/'98
 
If I blindfolded you & played both a new SS1 & a vintage model,I doubt you'd pick which is which.If you find a good buy,grab it.Dont be too concerened with it's age.
One difference you will notice however is the feel.The vintage bass might feel as though it has a thinner neck,but being 4 string,they'll both have thin,fast necks.
Iuserneim's vintage SS2 with EMG's sounds practically the same as my 2007 SS2 with MEC's.I would've thought they'd sound more noticably different seeing as they have different pickups so I was pretty surprized at the lack of difference in tone.
Good luck.It doesnt get any better than a Streamer.
 
the feel is most important !
because, if you like the feel, you will like to play the bass, and that way, your sound will be better, because your hands like the bass.

A 1992 and a 2009 Stage 1 are almost identical.
The main difference is pre-post 1990.

You'd be able to feel the difference, but probably not hear, I'm with Greg for the most part, but the neck dimensions and lack of Volute is definitely extremely comfortable on the older ones.
 




I'd never consider LACK of a volute as a positive
comfort feature. I mean, I can easily live without
one but when a bass has one, I always find it to
be a minor positive comfort feature.

More important however is the meaning of the
volute. It means the neck has the dual action
truss rod, a very worthwhile improvement. Many
players will tell you that they've NEVER had to
put their dual action truss rod into "reverse" but
it's like an insurance policy ... better to have it
and never need it than vice-versa.

I think most players have come closer than they
realise to the need to "reverse" the force. I live
in a very typical 4-seasons climate, and cuz I
tune DGCF and sometimes use TI Jazz strings,
I have had to put a coupla rods into "reverse".
From that, I'm estimating that if I tuned EADG
and used more typical strings, I'd maybe never
had to use "reverse" but would be only a string
change or a down-tuning away from needing it,
at least in the summer. I'd call that "close".

I have some nice basses with single action rods
that over the years have proven always unable
to use low tension strings during the summer.
This further sold me on dual action rods. If you
live in Phoenix, or Yellow Knife, you don't need
a dual action truss rod.

Not sure about Glanshammar yet...don't think I'd get along too well with a lot of people, but we'll see...

Anyway, if you don't speak english here, Greg will taunt you and Florin will send you threatening letters, or something.

No, I don't have any special contacts at Flaa. I think there is a cheap Stage I for sale at basschat.co.uk right now, though.

Right.. You're not coming anywhere near my basses if you intend to play the ♣♣♣♣ out of them, I like the ♣♣♣♣! The ♣♣♣♣ is absolutely neccessary for a bass to funktion.
