I can't believe that. Jaco Pastorious my friend! Nobody can top him. And when I say that I mean it in just the same way as when I say nobody can top Jimi Hendrix. It is quite simply just impossible. Also it's good to see you know Brooke Fraser man. She doesn't live too far from me. Here in little Aotearoa New Zealand

What about Tal Wilkenfeld?

She's like 20, plays with Jeff Beck. Incredible technique.

She's got a solo album out now "Transformation"

She's one of my new favorite bassists
 
+1 to Wilkenfeld,she's amazing! Told my son he should marry her, but he preffers brunettes.
 
Richard Bona, well worth a Listen, there's a fantastic performance on youtube, pulled from 'Later...With Jools Holland'. Playing a Fodera with a capo on the 5th or 7th fret, a really lovely piece -he sings along while playing this unbelievable chordal thing.

Jeff Berlin was a name/face i'd heard but never investigated. I met him and saw him play at Bass Day UK a couple of years ago, and he was fantastic - Funny as hell too. He does among other things, a version of 'Tears In Heaven' which has to be heard/seen to believed. A really gracious guy.

Tripp Walmsey is another fantastic guy, shared a few beers with him at a clinic.
 
The Manring on youtube thing is funny, if a little harsh. His version of 'Sugar' on the same DVD (Hudson Music - Bass Day '98) is really great - He does go on about Jaco a hell of a lot though.

I've seen Tal Wilkenfield around a lot, i can't help but feeling she's just a bit of a poster girl for bass fans, i know she's a fantastic player, but a lot of stuff i read concentrates on how 'hot' she is rather than how good she may or may not be at playing the bass. I bet there are another 100 20 year old guys as good, or another 100 less attractive young women who are as good or better.

I actually don't think she's taht 'hot' at all, a bit awkward and geeky with big frizzy hair, she looks like Manrings long lost Daughter....I wonder if she likes Jaco?

Not to sound too critical but you've just help perpetuate the very thing you pointed out about Tal,that you dont approve of.
There may well be 100 other less attractive young men or women bass players that are just as good,but where are they?I'll tell ya where they aint,& that's promoting not only solo bass,but the bass as a legitimate stand alone instrument,as well as a support instrument.What better way to promote bass than a young,attractive & gifted musician,who's not only capable of performing as a soloist,but also capable of landing the bass slot for the like of Mr.Beck & Chick Corea.At 20 years old,to play at this level with what's regarded as the pinnacle of musicians,isnt too shabby of an acheivement.You could even say that these people are musician's mucian's,rather than top 40 darlings.Maybe Tal would be more legitmate in your opinion if she were to play with Snoop Dogg,Britney or some other "successful" musical act.But one thing is certain,& that's not many 20 year olds go from Berkely to playing with the bands she has,while having their own solo CD featuring some of the greatest musicians alive.Is Tal a big deal?Most definatly.Regardless of her appearance or wheather you,me or anyone finds her attractive or not.Not at all bad for a girl from Bondi,who had to be accompanied by her father to travel overseas to persure a carreer in music coz she was too young to travel alone.Compared to the plethora of other musicians that have been working longer than Tals even be alive,to achieve half of what she's achieved before she was even legally allowed to drink in the USA.
Excuse me for banging on & on,but your post came off as pretty naive & overly critical of someone you obviously know very little about.

Glad it gave you the oppertunity to let off steam though. Nice to know you feel strongly enough about it to contest my little note.

I hadn't mentioned her playing in a negative way "I know she's a fantastic player", nor had i hinted upon how successful or not the people she did sessions with were. I certainly didn't discount how hard she's worked, or her journey to where she is today.

It was more of a critiscism of the constant reference on forums and in magazines to how hot she is...rather than how good she is as a player...hence the poster girl reference; surely if she's a success on merit alone, then her appearance should be an afterthought?

Agreed, to make a semi-valid point with little detail, to then follow it up with a hypocritical "i wouldn't touch her with yours" style satement doesn't aid my argument, of which i'll withdraw that statement and apologise to anyone offended by it.

A point i had originally made then deleted was the fact there was a video of her leaving Marcus Miller for dust at the Sadowsky Booth on YouTube i saw last year. Should have left that and deleted the other. (And that's from a huge Miller Fan).

If we all felt the same about the same stuff, i'm sure we'd all be pretty f*cking bored.

I'll get down off my high horse, if you step down from your soap-box.

Don't forget if you join a forum to read other peoples opinions, you cant whip your handbag out every time you disagree with someone. As a moderator, you should know this.
