solo bassists?

No. But go bankrupt and you've got a lot of people backing you up :D
 
But there's certain things I wouldn't be able to do that I've always wanted to try... like... start my own country.

GAS for new basses is bad enough... I think constantly looking for the next better rollercoaster might truly break my bank.

Not to mention the amount of sawdust those joints use to mop up all the vomit.I spose you could grind down some Korean nightmare basses. :idea:

im doing an assignment on solo bassists and this post has been incredibly helpful! just goes to show how helpful this forum is. but it wouldnt be anything without everyone of you guys :P
 
Errrr...all these great names and no one says Marcus Miller?

I know many wouldn't really consider him a 'soloist', but he's just so silky smooth when moving in and out of the pocket.

Have heard Avishai Cohen? Apart from ripping it up on the double bass, he plays a mean electric! (An old Fender Jazz in fact! That should make you more curious! :D)

Just checked him out! Very cool stuff indeed! But there's just something about that Miller sound... And Jaco sound... Hard to describe, but they just get the job done :D
 
A little more obscure bassist whose diversity of Jazz to Metal to Pop always seems to bring something to the table is Trevor Dunn. Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Sean Lennon, MoonChild, TRio Convusant, etc.

There's a younger guy coming up and he's great. His name is Hadrien Feraud. He's got youtube stuff. Also check out Jeff Schmidt (you can find him on youtube also), he's great. And Alain Caron, Michael Manring, and Gary Willis.
 
I just heard a FEMALE solo bassist-singer-songwriter for the first time... turns out she's been at it since I was in high school...

Check out "Be Your Friend", "After Love", "Never", "Letterbox"... oh, hell... listen through to all of 'em.

Some cool stuff in there... I've ordered the album. :)
