Back, in a way, after a detour of GAS:



I had a bit of money for graduation, and I was leaning towards a Rockbass five string fretless, but I found I could justify a very different instrument a lot better. So I went for the upright, and it's a dream. This leaves me time to amass the funds required for a true Warwick fretless five, which would make me happier in the long run.

But yeah, on the off chance someone remembers me from here, I stopped coming to this forum for a few months in order to save up for that beast above, the GAS from being around here I was afraid would distract me.[/img]

Aye, and the original self-titled release was down at the time from spinning. It looks bare to me without the third vinyl up on the wall. Luckily I don't have to keep my upright in such a scary area, since then I've hung my Jaco-esque bass on the hanger, and my Ampeg occupies that general vicinity. My gear hasn't changed much in the past few months, I just have that singing giant standing in the other room.

Order of effects: Analogman Mini BiComp > ElectroniX MESSDrive (modded) > ZVEX Fuzz Factory (modded) > Zvex Seek Wah II > Dunlop 105Q Bass Wah > Electro-Harmonix Micro Q-Tron (modded) > Line 6 ToneCore Dock w/intervhangeable modules: (Echo Park and Liqua-Flange); powered by a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus.

As you can see, I love having envelope filter and wah effects for my funk! I use this setup with my Genz-Benz Shuttle for smaller gigs and as a backup to my Mo' Bass rig, which has it's own analog effects.

I'm slapping away on it right now, I'm still really surprised how good slapping sounds on it. I'm really starting to think I was created to play fretless either that or to modify stuff

you should have left the last fret or two in, the slappage would be a lot more defined, (saw it on the fretted/less bass) but great Job man!

Yeah, I was thinking about even making a brass "slap plate" but after I got the epoxy on there and started slapping away, I don't think I need it. I did a little sound clip of it after I finished and put it on my myspace ( www.myspace.com/caseytinsley ) I did a bit of slapping in it so you can hear a bit of what it sounds like, Threw in a little tapping here and there as well.

With my onboard eqing, I can pretty much get any sound out it now. Pretty groovy, I can't wait to get back up on stage with this monster

maddrakkett, what is your opinion on Zvex pedals? I'd really like to put my hands on a johnny octave but i am a little scary to throw that amount of money into one pedal.

ZVEX pedals are very cool tone machines that sound like no others and well worth the money, but they are made for guitar (Zachary Vexter warns that his pedals are for guitar, not bass), so yo do lose some bottom end.

With my Fuzz Factory, I had to change the input and output caps to much higher values and then add an internal passive blend control to blend some clean bass into the signal, but even then, it still sounds quite raspy and buzzy rather than thick and fat. But that's the nature of a good fuzz and it has enough quirkiness to become a unique effect all its own for my bass. The Seek Wah also narrows the frequency range, cutting both the highs and lows and doing its magic on the mids. But there's still enough bottom (though I might add an internal blend to this as well) to make it work and it is dang funky when playing staccato and totally spacey when used as a sample-and-hold sequence effect through a long and hollow repeating delay!

I have never tried a Johnny Octave, but since it is an octave up, instead of down, I imagine it will really emphasize the highs and de-emphasize the lows in your bass tone, possibly making it sound thin. This would be one of those definite "try-before-you-buy" pedals!
