Pickup Consideration: Mirrored Ps on a thumb...

How would that sound?

Let's take a thumb BO: the growly tone, the midrangy cut-through-the-mix-like-a-hot-knife-through-butter character comes from the Bridge Js, among other things...

What would happen to that character is instead of Bridge Js, the Thumb BO was equipped with Mirrored Ps, in the buzzard/stryker layout? The bridge P should pick up the midrangey growl, and the neck pickup should add more versatility, right?

Maybe a little less Growly, but still awesome, right, in a RAWK (yes, RAWK, not rock...) kind of way?

That's what I also think, but on a purely theoretical level... I guess that since I've never seen a mirrored-Ps thumb I'll have to put the order in if I want any sort of first hand experience...

Well, the Mirrored-P corvette was a "budget" alternative, let's put it this way...

I was just think'n about how that set up would look and sure enough here's one of you killer mock ups.The bass looks better then I thought it would.The pickups don't look much for the body.Thank for the picture your mock ups rock.

it would sound REALLY punchy and bright. There will be low end, but you will find yourself playing with the electronics to get some serious low end if you do this with mirrored p.

it would sound REALLY punchy and bright. There will be low end, but you will find yourself playing with the electronics to get some serious low end if you do this with mirrored p.

Punchy is good... Punchy is very good... And bright is also good, It's an 8-string after all, the high strings have to cut through...

eight on the p pickup on my streamer....generally speaking, it sounds best when it's mere millimeters from the strings...it's just a constant fight to make sure I'm not hitting the P/U and getting that awful 'clack'.

I have mine set really close to the strings also. The issue with mirrored p's is that essentially you'll have a wide-spaced Jazz setup for the E and A, and more of a MM setup for the D and G. Getting them to balance each other can take some time, in my experience at least, but properly adjusted for the player's style it's damn hard to beat the sheer massiveness of the low end across all four strings. For me at least, the P-P is a tweaker's paradise 8) . ~M~
