Not only would a Warwick make a difference in your live sound, as your experience indicates it would, but even if the playback quality of the video obscured that difference, you would still have found more widespread acceptance and somewhat friendlier critique here ..... as long as a Warwick bass is plainly recognizable in the video. This is a verrrry brand-loyal bunch here at the Warwick forum. Judgement here is not always, shall we say, 100% pure and objective ;-)

So, a Warwick would get you not only "much difference in sounding" [your words], but also "much difference in hearing" [my words]. "Sounding" is physics, it's objective. "Hearing" is perception, it's subjective ... and thus open to 'influences' [such as "Hey, that crazy guy is playing my favorite bass ... and he's just great !!! "]

Bro..
You can browse for mridangam or Tabla in the net and you can see many people playin it. Or in my page you can see Sakir hussains page .. and you can listern to him playin tabla. . But you don t have to learn these instruments to apply that techniqe on Bass. U need only have to play like tabla on Bass strings.. I mean, few excecises.. From right to left and left to right and paradiles with fingers.... Thats all..

I didn t want to come back to the forum and indulge in undue discussion,coz many are commenting this Subjectively rather than Objectively. But I am getting some private mails from few members saying that i am totally ignorant of playing melody and even about Bass Gtr. . But there are certain criticisms which are true.... I aggree that Its hard to find melody when I play Fast, especially in a Guitar of a lower quality... But I said earlier that the Video is purely based on percussive style and not melodic. But, I don t play speed Bass during songs... However, Some guys of this Reputed Forum even mail me privately saying that I can not even play in a Band. . My Band's MP3 song (called Good times)is in . When u open that page U can listern to it. Pl listern to the bass I played... and comment it purely objectively... I love to listern to even bad comments , if it is meaningfull..... Its a Raga called joggh( Cm b5 scale)....

I don't agree at all with this, I'm afraid. The brand loyalty around here is for example nowhere near the levels on the Ernie Ball forums.

I wouldn't have enjoyed the video even if Jayen had been playing a Warwick, but the songs with his band sounds great. I used to dig shred stuff when I was younger, but it has lost it's appeal to me know.

As fast as these power metal guys can play, it just doesn't impress me for a moment. Anyone can do it with appropriate practice. The thing is... there's just no imagination going into the bass lines. Essentially, all they do is follow the guitarists note for note except for the occasional lock in with the dual kick drum on the intro.

Can't fault his playing for second. But I agree that a lot of power metal is just sheer speed. That's why I fail to understand why people seem to think that Dragonforce are so awesome (IMO, they're one half ego and one half shred - I sometimes wonder if they've even heard of 'melody')... Sonata Arctica on the otherhand...
 
hey ... power metal isnt sheer speed, that forte belongs to grindcore, or even death metal.

and the only time where you can "blame" the bassist for being uncreative is when he never wrote a riff or a song on the band ... for all we know, all the guitar riffs actually came from the bassist (i.e. Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse) and the guitar is following the bass, not the other way around.

and Dragonforce?! dang! ... that band is what i call "straight from the sweep picking and shredding 101 exercise book" ... if you compile all their riffs and lines, you'd actually find out they are exercises connected by an open chord *lol* they are the ones who suck, not their genre.

Finally, Ederson Prado ... wow... awesome! i ddnt like the song, but i have nothing but great admiration for his playing.
 
Perhaps 'sheer speed' was missing the point a touch, but I stand by the feeling that a lot of power metal just sounds like the same high speed arpeggios and sweeps and double-pedalling, with the same male vocalist who stays perpetually in the ball-crushing high register instead of trying to sing a little lower to, you know, mix things up a bit.

Hey, how bout you put up a glossary as a sticky. And no sound clip for definitions. We need word descriptions. Sound clips won't help those of us to whom all metal genres sound alike.

Sound clips can accompany the definitions, but they can't BE the definitions. Then we can put the clips in our MP3 trainers and slow them down til they sound like Mongolian night-long throat-singing festivals :-)

I gotta admit that the compulsion to leap into threads with seemingly ever-newer varieties of metal subgenres is hugely amusing from an outsider perspective. It's kinda like reading the Vintage Fender geeks fussing over slotted vs phillips screws and flat vs domed top knobs and stuff like that.

But I am serious about the glossary. I get curious sometimes. I never ignore a thread just cuz it gets full of talkmetal. Metalheads encounter problems and find solutions just like "real" musicians [snarkle snark snark .... ], and that is a useful read no matter what genres one plays or prefers to hear.

So I admit, I encounter your laundry list of genres tangentally to my reading other info I can sometimes actually use, and I have no real world musical use for the glossary, but what about understanding my fellow low enders ???

One of the local bassers I admire most plays in a full spectrum of bands, from metal to classic symphony. he's a good friend, and I've NEVER hears him slice up the metal pie into 144 pieces, so you really have made me curious as well as amused.

lol, the metal genres is a kinda funny thing but when it's well used it's great to really defining a metal band musical style while speaking to another metal guy who knows what the heck you're talking about. For you golem, Here's power metal:

oh, flipper saved me the trouble by posting clips.

well, to explain it in words:

1,) power metal = VERY British based take on metal, this genre wouldnt be what it is without Iron Maiden. Shredding and the stock arpeggio are very common here and are abused by a lot of bands. i forgot to mention the stuff like "judas priest" vocals, stock double peds and tight pants always make an appearrance here. its also rare that the lyrics talk about something reality based ... if there is, then its clouded with DnD metaphors. while this genre is very technical in nature, its very rare that it changes to "unrelated" time signatures the way death metal does. This branch isnt as dark as death metal. If this was an RPG character, it would be in a knight costume while the death metal guy is a demon clothed in black armor *lol* hope you understand the nerd literature

2.) Death Metal = it evolved from Thrash Metal (also a harsher version of British Metal), and its trademarks are dissonance, deep vocal growls, riffs in the key of E or whatever the open string is, sudden switch of time signatures... compared to its peers, this branch of metal has the most focus on technicalities and twists... it avoids "happy" sounding at all cost. my band (see my signature link) is death metal... and to be more specific it is 90's death metal. Death Metal branched out currently into a genre known as "gore" or "brutal" metal. its basically death metal without the focus on technicalities, and more on going to the lower end of the sonic spectrum. The Darklord, in a way, could be the happiest in this genre of metal.

3.) Grindcore = the result of thrash metal focusing on the punk side of things ... melody is ignored while speed is the focus and groove is basically what happens in between the 32nd notes of the beat. its rare that this type of music goes below 180bpm ... and dont be surprised to listen to 5 seconds songs here - yes, yes, i really dont consider them songs, but well, punk is about rebellion and i guess there are bands out there who actually have a statement in that 5 second song.

Why would you look stoopid, even if I were kidding ? It's perfickly reasonable info to explain online. I can follow most of the text info. Examples by band name convey nothing to someone who isn't actually listening to those bands, but there's enuf basic info without knowing the sound of the specific bands.

I will hafta check the clips via someone else's connection. My only connection is at work and all such links are blocked. We have a massive 2-way firewall and censorship system.

Oddly enuf, this forum slips thru the cracks [but not including the links]. So does BadAss Basspalyer forum as did the old DudePit. But the new DudePit and the EBMM forum are blocked. Ebay and most auctions, myspace, youtube, photobucket, all blogs, etc etc etc are all blocked.

well, i guess theres a cultural reason for that. one form of (rather mean) humor in FIlipino culture is 'pretending' to be serious about asking someone to do something (say, a dance) and then while he does it, the group laughs behind his back, then turn around again and pretend to enjoy the dance while the rest are still making fun of the person. it is a very mean form of humor and i myself dont engage in it... i however have been a victim of such as a kid, so i kinda have this knee jerk reaction :)

i did post my personal definitions of those music genres though ... i hope it helped, while you arent able to view the clips flipper posted :)
