$$ over standard corvette 5

I`m very fond of the $$, especailly the red finish. Merely tried a right-hand, so I didn`t get any impressions on playability.

But I`m also very fond of the Corvette Std. versatility and sound. It`s the purest "sound of wood", as I can see.
 
Years ago, I owned a Corvette Standard 4 string in Swamp Ash (natural)... It was a great bass, it played great, even though the finish was getting dirty quite quick.

I sold it to get my first 5 string (an Ibanez BTB555) but now I regret the way my Corvette feels, comfort-wise... As far as I remember, the sound was good but very mid-orientated.

I'll probably soon go for a Corvette $$ 5 string, but in Nirvana Black... It looks awesome this way !
 
If I was unclear to anyone, when I said FNA I actually mean't the FNA not the Jazzman, the discontinued Stingray style single Humbucking FNA.
 
You won't go wrong with whatever you decide is your fave! for the record... the $$ is outstanding value!

Going back to the Rockbag/case! I was amazed how good it was for a gigbag! I would get a hard-case if I was going to be throwing it in the back of a van, but the bag is fine for taking with me in a car.

Even better... get yourself one of those custom Warwicks that comes with a hardcase :wink:

I compared my $$ with a passive corvette – and was taken completely by the $$. The string spacing on the 5 seems fine to me – slap does take a while to adjust but not impossible by any means.

I’m new to warwicks but it seems with so much choice of woods, electrics etc comparing is difficult – each has it’s own character the hard bit is choosing! Try ‘em out and don’t leave your car on a meter.

My new warwick lives in a hard case, in a locked house surrounded by machine gun turrets – and will remain that way until the first scuff or two then it gets the same treatment as everything else…

I made the trip to Sound Control in Manchester. Really nice shop. It's set in a warehouse, and they've got an incredible selection of WWs. Vampyres, Infinity, Thumbs BO, NT, vettes, streamers, customs, fretless, ... I recond they must have at least two dozen different instruments on show. Shame the demo amp they got sucks :)

And I'm glad I did that trip! They didn't have a $$ 5 string, but a couple of $$ 4 strings, which I tested. THe weird thing, the two supposedly identical models sounded different. The first one was a high gloss black, and sounded OK, but mot that WW sound. I think the strings were too bright and just didn't help to bring out the WW character through. Pretty much all the instruments were setup relatively high. Maybe the bass tech likes it that way, but I guess it's no big deal.

The second one was transparent red, and sounded much much better. Strings were more bedded in I suppose, and the overall instrument had much more character. I loved the way the pickup responsed to inputs, when you really dig into it, it really barks and growls, and give that sound I was looking for. It sounded very good in slaps too.

Much much better than the standard corvette I tested as well, which sounded weak when slapped. A bit like my Hohner in passive mode in that department. Twangy and gutless. However, it had that mellow warwick tone I love for finger style. But definitely not a slapper.

About pickups on the $$. I like them. They are big and chunky, but I found it no problem for slapping and popping, even considering my less that accurate style. They also provide loads of support to play at different positions. I play with my thumb anchored usually, and it provides plenty of support from bridge to neck. Great for experimenting with tone further.

The output is pretty high. I kept clipping the amp with slappings. The tone shapping options were great, lots of pickup combinations.

I also tested a Streamer Jazzman, and loved it, but out of my price range. It sounded even better that the $$ (obviously), and I loved the way the pickups responded to your playing style. It looks like a WW trademark, and makes the sound so much more interesting.

So, it's a deal! I'm getting a $$ 5 string, natural swamp ash, and I'm gonna rock its socks off! :twisted:

congrats SM - I've got the same model. Mine had a high set up too, is this a warwick set up thing? I've read a few notes about 'high' setups on new warwicks - whatever, a tweak on that bridge and you're away.. Enjoy
 
Today I played two $$ 5 string in two different shops.

The first one I played (plugged in a WW ProFet head with 4*10) sounded quite good, but that goddamn b-string was floppy as hell... I thought that B-strings on Warwicks were powerful, I was a bit disapointed.

The second one I played (plugged in an EBS Drome combo - 12") sounded better, the B-string was not as floppy as the other one's, I would say a bit more tight and precise, but a bit muddy... But still it wasn't the best B-string I've ever come accross...

So, do the 5-string $$ have floppy B-string or what ? Does it come from the Warwick strings ? The gauge put on factory?
 
Up ! Any opinion on the $$'s low-B anyone ? :shock:
 
yeah i'd be interested to know that too...although i really need to get around to getting to a shop and trying it out personally
 
I have a vette $$ 5 and I have not experienced any floppyness at all. /Patrik
 
I did trade my vette st for the $$ for about 2 weeks before trading back. I was very much caught up with the look and the switches and wanted to give it a shot but the pickup placement was difficult to get used toplus the screws that hold the pickups have those big humps on them that were uncomfortable to sit my thumb on over all just too many adjustments to make for a bass that still didn't have 3 way electronics. Too bad 4 me because I did like the sound and fortunatly ran across the fna jazzman 5 which gives me everything that I found lacking in the $$. MM style pickup with room to pop. We all have different needs. Either way long live Warwick!

Well, it is right now, still awaiting on my Thumb 5.

... That's right, I went for a thumb! Sorry $$ worshipers, I still love the Bucks, but man, I just couldn't pass on the occasion. I'll get a $$ 4 later :)
 
The vette $$ is not ideal to pop with, it takes time to figure it out. There's an interesting Vette $$ in the custom shop galley. The bridge PU is moved closer to the bridge leaving some pop-space between the PUs.

Warwicks explanation is this (copied directly from the custom shop page):

"The musician who had assembled this Warwick Custom Shop Corvette $$ wanted to get the bridge pickup positioned even closer to the bridge. At this position the amplitude of the string is not at its full range and thus the sound spectrum, delivered by the bridge pickup, is shifted to a brighter and slightly mid-emphasized sound."

While that is most likely true, I bet the musician just wanted more space for pop'n. But maybe the space is a bit too close to the bridge... hmm ... I don't know....anyway :D

I pop between the nack and first PU on mine. No probs when you get it down...
 
I'm shopping for a $$-4 right now myself. Played one in Charlotte and loved it. My first time taking one for a ride. :) Raising the money now....
