$$ over standard corvette 5

Anyone would have any objections as to choosing a doublebuck over a standard active corvette (5 string?). For some reason, it is cheaper than the standard model (£670 vs £760), I just wonder why since the $$ provides more on the table.

For example, I can see that the pickups position could be a problem as far as playability goes (finger style, slap). Would the neck profile be different? Tone? I am really looking for that classic woody Warwick sound, I do not know if the $$ would provide that in the same way as the standard corvette does.

I really need to upgrade from my K5 to a proper 5 string instrument! :) I really dig the monster look of the $$, just wondering about the other aspects of it.

Looking forward to joining the Warwick fan club :)

I've never had any problems with my playing style (fingerstyle, basically) with the $$. Can't speak for the string spacing on the 5 string though. Splappin's not really my thing, but I've still done it on the 4 string $$!

The $$ sounds as amazing as it looks - and quite a versatile range of tones - I regard it as an outrageous bargain and a serious lump of badass wood!

Just keep an open mind and try them all out!

I'm not a big slapper either. I'm mostly rock-metal, that kind of thing. For funk, I think a standard corvette would be more the ticket, but even then, slap and pops don't look impossible on that monster, just need more control. And it's a 5 anyway, so you REALLY need more control on the first place :)

Thing is to be able to try a $$. They are not that common. I'll bite the bullet and go for it. Now... Black or natural... Black looks so badass... The one Darth Vader would play :twisted: But natural looks very cool too. And I can change the taint later on if I go the custom route 8)

Cool, I'm gonna get a Warwick! :D
 
Hi Sur-Mon,

You're not going to make a mistake with the vette $$. The massive PUs doesn't interfear playing fingerstyle. Slap 'n pop is difficult in the beginning but adjusting the PU height slightly and a lot of practice makes the trick.

I've been impressed by pictures of the natural wood - but i don't think I'd swap by black $$ now...
 
The natural is nice, but I also have the black. I slap on mine all the time. With the right control and PU settings it has a pretty good slap tone. And ofcourse it's perfect for rock/metal stuff...
 
I have a natural $$ and I like to play all kinds of stuff on it... slap and pop take getting used to, but totally doable...



The ability to pull up a bunch of sounds is great. I would have liked a 3-band EQ, but I will just increase the number of warwicks with a jazzman. :D

BTW, what case would you recommend for it? It doesn't seem to have an 'official' case for it.

It comes with a very well padded Rock Bag Premium line (at least in Germany). This works enough for me at the moment. Once we start gigging again I'll go for a case. ... But then I need to buy a new car as a case wont fit in :(
 
Beautiful natrual $$ there. As far as cases I use the bag it came in...
 
I did know about the bag, wasn't sure if it was any good, but apparently so. I'll worry about the case if I need to travel with it. Thx guys.
 
To be honest, when I played a $$ I was horribly un-impressed, when I played the FNA with a Wenge Neck, it soudned like gold, gold wrapped aroung a million dollars, in a diamond knapsak with all forms of gold bars spewing out. It really sounded Beefy, and the $$ sounded like really weak grossness... This was all in an Ampeg Classic 8x10 stack.
 
I have to admit, I'm always a bit perplexed when I see "which bass is better?" type posts. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, but I think it's more important to consider what bass will fit you as a player best. I only bring this up because we're comparing a humbucker bass to a single-coil bass, and they will have inherant differences. Sure, the $$ has a single-coil "mode", but we're kidding ourselves if we think that's giving us the same tone as say the FNA Jazzman with an actual single-coil pickup. You buy a $$ for the humbuckers.

Sorry, I'm not trying to vent. And I could certainly be wrong. I just don't understand comparing apples to oranges...

Yeah well, I wish I could afford a FNA, or a thumb or whatever high end bass I could pick.

Anyway, I've finally found a shop near where I live that has a $$ (even a 5 string and not too expensive) that I can try. I'll put it against the standard corvette active and I'll see.
 
Sorry for the confusion, I didn't mean to compare the FNA in terms of cost - just that it uses humbucker and single-coil pickups. Personally I think both the $$ and the Standard are excellent basses (especially for the money), but they are different beasts to an extent.

And if you were a 4-string guy, I'd try to give you a deal on my FNA Ltd! If only I was made of money...

Check out their warwick range :) In Liverpool central.

I can see... FNA Jazzman, Streamer $$, Corvette, Thumb, Streamer Jazzman 5 (if only I could afford...), Corvette $$ NB, Thumb, Streamer Jazzman 4, ... The pic looks recent too.

Doesn't looks expansive and more £££ though... But at least I can try them for feel.

Just got my first warwick too and opted for the $$ over the standard corvette.

SM –different woods may explain the prices – personally I love the swamp ash feel with a natural finish. You should get a keener price with a natural finish, which looks very cool IMHO, plus you have the joy of regular wax!

I compared my $$ with a passive corvette – and was taken completely by the $$. The string spacing on the 5 seems fine to me – slap does take a while to adjust but not impossible by any means.

I’m new to warwicks but it seems with so much choice of woods, electrics etc comparing is difficult – each has it’s own character the hard bit is choosing! Try ‘em out and don’t leave your car on a meter.

My new warwick lives in a hard case, in a locked house surrounded by machine gun turrets – and will remain that way until the first scuff or two then it gets the same treatment as everything else…
