New Warwick User, quick string question!

Hey guys, I just recently got a Corvette $$ 5 string from MF. Came with the Warwick Black Label strings. I thought the bass sounded kind of dark, so I bought a set of DR Long Necks to throw on. I've come to find out the bass was manufactured in 2006, and must have been sitting in stock since then. My question to you guys is that the DR's are really too bright for me.... and the current set of Black Labels I have are very dark, almost muffled. Is what I'm experiencing a combination of the bass or a set of old strings? Before I order a new set of Black Labels I figured I'd ask. I love the bass - had an Ibanez SR500 for a short period of time, then returned it for the Warwick. I've only played bass a few months now, but have been playing guitar for about 10 years now. Here is a pic for ya!
 
I'm also a long-time guitarist (25+ years) recently converted to full bass player (2+ years now), and I also bought a 5-string $$ in Nirvana Black, just like yours.

In my opinion, it must be old strings (and it may need a profession re-setup), because my $$ was a fresh 2007, only 2 days on the wall at my local Guitar Center and when I played it, I could not put it down; it just felt so "right."

I later tried some DR Black Beauties, but found them to be flatter sounding than the Warwick Black Label. Turns out, the Warwick strings were a big factor in my favoring both the tone and feel of the $$. I get great tone from both Black Label and EMP Warwick strings.

My Thumb NT is currently strung with DR Black Beauties. They look awesome with the Bubinga body and black hardware, and they even feel and sound great, but I must admit, the Warwick strings still perform slightly better.

Some are claiming the ash body gives the $$ a "boomy" sound, but I haven't noticed any problems there, and you say the DRs make it actually too bright, so again, I think it is more of a string/setup issue.

Grab you a fresh set of Warwick Black Labels (or better yet, the long-life EMPs, if you can find them) and see if they don't bring well-balanced life to a great bass!
 
I've not been able to find EMP's here in the US, the only listing I see for them are from Europe. I will have to try the Black Labels though.
 
EMPs (if you can get them in the US)!

They're my string of choice now, and cheap when you consider how long they last!

Mike's Chop Shop on Ebay has EMP's, although I have never tried them. I'm a DR guy and hate to try something new when I have something that works. I have Hi-Beams on my $$ now but I'll go back to Marcus Miller Fat Beams when I switch...

Black Label are very fine Stainless Steel strings, and have plenty of top end.
Gave 'em another try, but with a brand new set!
 
Thanks guys, thats what I was hoping. Ordered a set online this morning, if all goes well I will track down a set of EMP's and try them too!

I`ve turned to DR Hi-Beams as well. Great, crispy sound, easy to pick.
I recommend them wholefartedly. 8)

Dammit I didn't know that, I just bought a Rockcase from Mike, oh well, he seems like a great guy, and I'd be very happy getting strings off him. Thanks for the heads up. I love this place. :D
