I wanna see that thing sanded! I think the thing that ruined some of the Flamin' Blonde LTD Thumbs was the bookmatching/occasional three piece bodies. Some looked terrible

As for the aforementioned pickup positioning, your use of lacewood will provide the depth of Mahogany so it wont sound like a thumb, but it will have some growly characteristics you'll be able to play around with. But it's your bass, and I'm sure whatever you choose will be awesome. Good luck fellow vette $$ owner!

If you want a smooth tone I would put a jazz pickup up by the neck.
 
ok guys, i brought home the body template for you
the body block is a little bent so im gunna sand that out real soon so dont worry, youl see the wonderful grain soon enough.

im pretty sure im gonna go bartolini pick ups with a humbucker at the bridge and a single jazz for the neck (im gonna plant the jazz a little closer to the finger board for a smoother tone)

ive got alot of work ahead of me :D

gday guys
ive got a wee problem

theres a slight bow in the block of lace wood and my teachers told me to sand it out with this special huge sander which i have to track down and a kitchen builder told me that i have to flip it up and just let the wood reseed back to staight :? :? :? :? :?
i dont know what to do!

any ideas to straightening out wood?

I would use EMG. Mirror P at the neck and J at the bridge. I play Jazz and even though all of my basses are J/J I would love to be able to blend in the warmth of the P sometimes.

can anyone tell me the advantages of those bridges that are like a seperate bridge for each string. im considering them

I hope I did that right. Take a look at that big guy. I don't think there is any musical advantage to the seperate saddles. I think they just started because they look cool.

Sorry mate - it can't realistically be done. You'll need to put it through a drum sander a few times.

Put it so the concave side is down and pass it through until it's nearly flat and then flip it and repeat.

If it ends up not being thick enough you could always laminate a suitably sexy piece on top.

Either that or work with it curved and emphasise it Warwick stylee!

Some swear that they're essential on a 5 string,why?I have no idea.
With a 1 piece bridge,you have to align it correctly.On a 2-Tek bridge you'll have each saddle to align.
 
im just gunna get the one piece bridge, its just easier :)
 
Or get a nice 2-piece Warwick bridge... I head they are pretty awesome... :P

i left my bodywood in the garage of my mates house instead of sitting in the hot sun in the car and when i got back, his dad cut it up to make a bike ramp for the kids!!!!

I COULDNT BELIEVE IT! :shock: :shock: :shock: i didnt know what to think!

anyway, he payed for it and am getting a new piece this week sometime

man, you are having rotten luck! Bloody expencive bike ramp!!

Make sure you ask for Quarter sawn wood, this minimises warpage.

Ive passed on the timber yards number to my luthier (allan Tomkins). Thanks so much for that Juzzo!

Also, I would keep in mind, the nordstrand passive p/j set. I have them in my tomkins & they are the best passive pickups on the market. Ask Greg, he's heard them in my bass. You can get a really warm P sound, screw in the J pick up for Jazz, or both up full bore give a wicked stingray type sound. If you want Allan Tomkins number, let me know & I'll PM it to you. He uses Nordies in all his basses.

Also go the badass bridge, you can have both string thru and bridge mount options in the one bridge. Great stuff!!

i would of rather picked the piece of wood personally anyway so il get the chance for that now
oh and the wood wasnt sanded back yet so it was looking pretty ordinary anyway. stuff happens ay :lol:
