ok guys, iv started to sort it out with the fretless bass im building for a major skool assessment

so far im gunna order;
-a body blank piece of lacewood (silky oak for all the aussies)
-ebony fingerboard
-and some form of maple neck

got any suggestions as 2 what type of maple? please share

anyway. il keep u all updated as it goes :D

ALSO; if anyone has any other ideas for neck woods please share, im not 100% on maple. want a fairly warm tone without comprimising sustain AT ALL!

Usually Hard maple is used for the neck :-)

All Maple woods sound almost identical, different prices reflects cosmetic differences.
 
ok so for the neck iv finalised hard maple and ebony fretboard
im so excited, once its finished, any of you are welcome 2 have a play if u come round 2 my hood :lol: :lol: :lol:

aye updates us as to what you've done it sounds like it will be one cool bass

I just might take you up on that offer Justin.I drive past your place on every return trip to Eden. :idea: Ya think you could have the bass finished by tomorrow?That's when I'll be heading home next. :lol:

when i get the woods in, il post photos rite away, ya kno iv noticed that every concept i draw, it ends up lookin like a thumb :lol:
nah, dont worry guys, im not gunna cope out, itl b my own design
 
heres a rough concept (very rough) :lol:

and no they arent frets, jus fret markings (but i dont want them anymore, it would be a sin to ruin a beautiful piece of ebony :lol: )

Cool Juzzo. I remember you telling me about this but seems that you have already started this all. are you planning on a 4,5 or 6 stringer?

what hardware and elecs are you planning to use?
 
well im going for a 4 string, cause im gunna use it for jazz and lounge sorta stuff and im gunna make it 4 string, easier, cheaper and im having withdrawal syntoms since i sold my beginner 4 string :lol:

i havent really put heaps of thought into the hardware and electronics and stuff. il pick the either black, chrome or gold depending on what would look best on it and ive got an idea on the bridge, prob have a string through body design for added sustain, probably use jazz pick ups (do bartolini make jazz pick ups?)
materials are coming in soon and im just getting ready for when they come in.

just listen to the sound clip on their site. it's a fretless, too (and some insane fretless player)

they are looking very futuristic, but you can also buy them with black pickup covers.
 
I, like you, built my own fretless back at school some years ago. I used bubinga (before I'd even seen a corvette!) for the body, ebony for the fingerboard and standard hard maple for the neck. However, my mate used birdseye maple for the neck - which Im not a massive fan of. Im very boring you see.

I would show you pictures of them but both my mates and mine were stolen from school when we were 16 literally the day we strung them up.

One of the saddest days of my life so far.
 
A note about Q-tuners...

It seems that they are now available in the transparent cover version either with silver wiring or black wiring inside, if you don't like the "bright red" look but dig the transparent look...

I know I do...

I wish I would have had this same project in school back then. That would have been fun.

I know it from my luthier, but I don't know if the products are actually already available. There are no pics that I know of, not on the q-tuner website, last time I checked at least...

It's not different material. The main magnets are still neodynium, with copper wrapping, but the copper is 'painted' or 'plated' (I don't know exactly...) in another color...
