MEC 2 band wiring question

I got some distortion issues with my Dolphin!
I took a look inside and it's a mess, looks like a few repairs have gone on over the years, so I removed the pots and with no effort the neck pick up cable came away, easy fix!
I checked out the wiring diagram, all looks fine apart from one of the wires running from the bridge pick up. It goes to the correct place on the pot (bass/treble) but it also bared off and soldered to the underside of the pot, this is not shown on the wiring diagram?

Is this correct, maybe just an easy earth point?

I'd guess it is the braided shield from the bridge pickup coax cable that is soldered (grounded) to the pot housing. This is commonly done in instrument wiring. The center conductor of the shielded cable continues to the contact on the pot. It is both a convenient ground point and a necessary ground point.

i'm sorry to jump in but i have a similar question: is it normal to have a wire soldered to the inside of the control cavity panel like the one i found today in my streamer? :shock:
 
Do you mean within the container (deep inside the cavity itself) or is it at the edge of the cavity where the cover snaps on? If you see copper foil at this connection, it would be for shielding the cavity, and the wire would connect the foil to earth ground. A picture would be helpful.

no i mean it's soldered to the cavity cover, i really mean the lid :D it's a '88 streamer and the cavity has the old plastic cover with screws in, the inside of that cover has copper foil coating..so it should be some old school shielding, right?

It's definitely shielding, and lots of it. Definitely connected to ground. 'New School' shielding uses conductive paint. I'm old school, so I trust the copper foil. :wink:

So is the wire soldered to the foil? If so is it soldered to anything else?

The wire will be soldered to a ground point, probably a pot housing. The pot/switch housings, bridge and /or tailpiece are usually bussed together and connected to the housing on the output jack. This forms the 'ground plane'. All signal paths (pickup outputs, entrances and exits from volume/tone controls) are in theory 'below ground'. That's what shielding is all about.
