Idea for my CS Corvette

My old Bubinga/all Wenge Corvette was stolen a couple of years ago and I replaced with an Ash 'vette 4 with active pups. I'm currently saving for a Thumb BO 4 but now I've had an extended play on one, I'm not sure the ergonomics suit me. So I started thinking about the CS route. So far I've come up with the following:

Corvette body with Ash back and Spalted Maple front-possibly with tone chambers
Natural finish
Gold hardware
Wenge neck with Tigerstripe Ebony board, fretted 34", yin yang inlays
Bart pups and 2 band pre amp OR TJ/J with MEC 2 band
Matched headstock

Comments welcomed.

Ash = light
TCS = reduced body weight
Wenge = heavy
Ebony = heavy

==> balancing issue ??

The bass sounds interesting though. 8)
 
I don't think the neck would dive to bad considering it's on the Corvette
body. If it were a Thumb then I would rethink the design but you should be
fine with those specs. Sounds cool. Let us know if you end up ordering it.
 
I have to agree with ThirdThumb on this, although I don't know how much wood is removed for tone chambers,
it will definitely make the body lighter. And 'vettes don't have very big bodies to begin with. Have you considered
a Streamer? It definitely has a bigger body (bigger sound?), a concave back and arched front (it may suit you
ergonomically) and I think having the top horn straplock pin closer to the neck helps with the balancing issue.
The corvette pin is a bit farther. I just ordered a Streamer LX with a shorter 32" maple neck. You gotta love Ned
Steinberger's design. I 'll have to wait and see how it does tone-wise though. If you are hell bent for a 'vette I
would suggest a bubinga one with it's heavy body (perhaps since you already had it you could try checking out the
bubinga $$ NT). Why did you sell your old 'vette anyway? :)

I still have the ash vette, the Bubinga was stolen. I have a probably unfounded dislike of NT and SN basses because if the neck gets damaged it writes off the instrument. I have considered a Streamer but I know the Corvette body shape suits me. I haven't had a chance to play a streamer although I like the body shape. I guess if I go ahead with this bass I may have to change the neck wood to maple or not have the tone chambers. this needs thinking about more I feel!

Absolutely try a Streamer LX or $$. The $$ has a maple neck and you may like the Ash-Maple combo.
Perhaps it will give you a really snappy tone, which I suspect you want (tone chambers?). Additionally
it will be a lighter neck, more balanced bass. Plus you get these nice humbuckers and tonal versatility.
I don't know why but I have a feeling the Streamer $$ is not selling very well and it's a shame
'cause it must be a hell of an instrument. It's the fault of those 'vette $$ that are selling like mad.
They 're everywhere. :D
 
I'm jonesin for a streamer $$. I like them better than the Vette. It would be cool to get a 6 string streamer $$.
 
I'm not really digging the HUUUGE pups on the $$ although I don't doubt it sounds superb.

Here's my latest revision:

Corvette body Ash/Spalted Maple with Ekanga veneer and tone chambers
Maple neck 5 piece with Ekanga stringers, Ebony board and matched headstock, with yin yang inlays
TJ/J pups and MEC 2 band
Gold hardware and natural finish.

Hey, this looks better than I imagined. I've been through the pricelist and it looks like I've some more saving to do as I reckon, using an Ash Corvette passive as the base model, that this baby runs at about £2600! Might have to get New Year out of the way first. Thanks very much for the mockup-you are too kind

Yeah no problem. That spalted maple will jack up the price for sure. Let us
know if you end up ordering it. Let me know if you want any other mockups
done. Just post your request on my thread and I'll add you to the list.

Anyone know what the difference is between A,B and C class spalted maple?

A has less stripes and dark lines in it than C. The pic on the CS options don't show a dramatic difference. Ssome high end boutique companie's spalted can be pretty crazy.
 
Thanks, I sort of figured that. I'm basing my calculations on Class C due to cost, but I'm sure it will still look good. I might do away with the idea of the Tone Chamber System. I've never played a bass with them, so I won't miss them. With the Ash/Maple body and Maple/Ebony neck I reckon I'll get a good combination of warm lows and snappy highs.

Like I said I have a Infinity SN with TCS so I can say that I do like the sound. It really opens up the growl. I like it. Maybe I'll post some videos sometime to show you what I mean.

+1. Nail on the head.

Density of a basses body plays A TON
on the over all tone.

Gutting a bass will let out more aggressive
mids and highs than without.
 
Yeah I really like the sound. I would be very interested has to how a bass made of bubinga would sound with the TCS in it.
