Hello there, here comes another one.

I am considering a Warwick bass.
Right now i have a crappy Fender Jazz mex.

I am thinking of a corvette.

Yesterday i tried a Thumb 5 string and a Corvette with thouse large pickups (dont rem the name). The corvette was a 4 string with a red color, i think it must have been ash body.

The necks are really thick on theese basses, though i didnt find that too uncomfortably, and i will get used to it more and more.

How good are the bridge on the warwicks?, the ones i tried had really floppy strings.

I tried to play some fast to see (master of puppers, blackened, hehe)
and it was pretty hard keeping up with the floppy strings.

Especially with the 5 string thumb.
This gets me worried cuz what if i wanna go martinie style a la cgcf:O..

I want a bass that can compete with 2 medium disted guitar.
What bass and pick ups should i use?

I really wants a thumb but they are a bit too expensive.

How well balanced are the basses? my cousin complains that his Thumb is killing his back.

And where are Warwicks cheapest :P

I live in south Sweden and i find them a bit cheaper in Copenhagen .
Denmark.

Are they cheapest in the Motherland Germany?

And if i wanna buy a used bass, what is the down sides?, any specific things on the bass i need to look out for.

Tjena Nojja och välkommen till forumet!!!

The Corvette with the fat pick-ups is called "doubleduck" or simply "$$". It's known for its low deep end. Some call it boomy, which is liked and disliked among the members on the forum. I have one and I love it. It's pretty versatile as you can run those passive PUs in parallel, series or as singlecoils. The singlecoil mode has not convinced me yet though.

If you want to cut through two distorted guitars you should probably look at the thumb in my opinion. Or the new neck-through Corvette $$ with bubinga body. Those basses has plenty of mid-range growl to cut through most sounds....

Please continue posting here mate. The Swedish mafia is getting smaller and smaller .... while Romania is catching up the pace.

Regarding prices you can count on that they are pretty equal throughout Europe on new basses. The 2nd hand market seems lower in Italy (for whatever reason) as far as I remember.

Hi there, and welcome. :D I'll try to give you some answers:

The bridge is awesome; you can adjust the strings in three directions. 8) The floppyness of the strings are a result from 1) scale length, which is a standard 34" (maybe you played a shortscale 30" Warwick ?), 2) tuning, 3) String gauge (maybe you played a Warwick with medium-light strings ?), and 4) action, but I'm not sure to what extent this influences string tension). In any case, I don't think that the bass or bridge influence string tension, so you shouldn't worry about that.

You want a bass that cuts through the mix right ?? Well, you've come to the right place. If you like/want Ryan Martinie's sound, you should definitely get the Thumb 5. But indeed, the Thumb is a lot more expensive than the Corvette. In that case I would go for the Corvette Bubinga. This bass, because it has Bubinga body, will give you a very recognisable Ryan sound. A great choice would also be the Corvette $$ (with Ash body). I haven't tried this bass, but I read many many great comments about this bass: very powerful and very versatile.

Two things. First thing: weight. Yes, Warwick is heavier than an average bass. I have no problems at all with weight. Only you can find out whether you're comfortable with the weight by playing for a couple of hours with a Wick. This is very personal.
Second thing: balance. Indeed, Warwick balances a bit different than a Fender. You should test drive the Warwicks with a strap as well (standing). However, at first it may feel a bit awkward, but you could get used to it easily. Again, this is also very personal.

Dunno; I'm not sure how expensive Warwicks are in Sweden. Check out www.thomann.de or www.musik-schmidt.de.

You don't know what you're getting. Maybe the bass was dropped or has got a nasty crack in the wood. Maybe the neck is twisted...........Sure, you can have a lot fixed by a good luthier, but that will add the costs significantly. A good thing of course, is that if nothing is wrong with the bass, then you have the same performance for a lot less money. Another benefit is that you can get a vintage Warwick which you can't buy new anymore.

I hope I'm helping you out a bit. Cheers. :D

Damn you ThirdthumB.... I was just about to write that.... You stole my thunder

Hehe...............I'm sure you can add some extra info that I forgot.

thanks guys^^

a killer looking 4str.corvette ash $$ in black. 1014 dollars.

and i also found a warwick 5 string single coil for the same price.

So maybe there will be a purchase of an warwick in June:)..

The price for new corvette standards are 1450 dollars at a store in malmö, and 2000 dollars at another one.

Good choise! I might have a 5-stringer for you. PM for more details!

floppy strings will be down to the bass being set up badly. warwick bridges are amazing in my opinion

Sometimes basses in shops are downtuned to make them sound more twangy. When I audition basses I take my own tuner... last time I find they were all consistently tuned down a semitone or whole tone.... unless you downtune anyway of course!

Thirdthumb, you were spot-on in all your advice! Nice post!

...except for this bit about the ash 'vette. If our friend Nojja is interested in a bass that is going to give him that Martine-sound, ash is not gonna cut it... especially an ash doublebuck.

Don't get me wrong; I think an ash doublebuck is perfect for certain applications... but those are mostly for things that call for "God of Thunder" rather than "Awe and wonder".

Thank you very much. :D

Indeed, I should have mentioned explicitly that the Corvette $$ BO (Ash) is drifting a bit away from the Ryan Martinie sound..................although it is very versatile. The $$ does have an (more) outstanding performance/price ratio in my opinion. Hence, I had to mention this bass.

I think...

It may be...

Yep, it is. This is where I suggest the Proline! Clear, Versitile and Balenced!

Yeah i feel like an idiot right now...

Not at all, the proline is exaclty as described. More versatyle than the $$ anyway IMHO.
The $$ has many switches and buttons, but you must be aware that the sound remains pretty much the same, in the big picture. And the single coil position doesn't sound like a real sc either.

You don't buy a $$ if you want a JJ sound. So the Proline is a better option than the Doubleduck (as patrick said :-) ) if you want a clear cutting sound.
Still, the bubinga one is better :-)

However, a $$ plus a Thumb is a killer combination if you want a wider range of sounds!

Just following Doc's example and shamelessly pushing my own particular basses!

So im not crazy! When I played the $$ in NYC it sounded the same no matter what I did... i mean there was some difference in tone but not enough to call it versatile.

I think the maple on the proline compared to the bubinga in standards just boosts the growl, but the maple seems to give it a wooten tone. So the solution is to get a custom shop where the two woods equally make up the body...

Couldn't disagree mpre. If you can't get a wide range of sounds from the $$ your doing something wrong IMHO. I can get several different sounds. ALthough I only use 2 dofferent settings normally, depending on what I'm playinbg...
