GRRRRR,,damn straplocks

we played a benifit today. it was hot and the gig was outside. set started ok, then at the 7th song the singer started talking to the crowd. I walked back to my amp and grabbed a towel and some cold water. wiped my head off, took a big chug of water and then it happen. front straplock let go and the Fortress One ate the stage full force and at full volume......F%$&*^&*((_^@#!$#%^&@#$%^&*()_..
don't know if it got damaged. I was so mad I couldn't even look at it after the show. I just put it in the case and haven't went near it. I will give Warwick credit. after it fell I picked it up, checked the tuning. it was still in tune!!!!

I gotta get the straplocks switched out for sure!

that sucks man, but still not as bad as when i had my wallmounts and they came out of the wall, fell down on my amp, and broke my speakon connecterl

It was still in tune though haha
 
Are these the internal strap locks your talking about, Mine let go about once a gig, im always ready for it, but it $hit$ me to tears every time. Id like a dollor for everytime ive replaced mine.

But look on the bright side, you got an impromtu bass solo!!

yeah, I'm talking about the internal straplocks. its happened once or twice before but I always caught it before hitting the ground. I'm gonna figure out a way to switch over to the schalers(spelling) straplocks!

I just looked the bass over. the damage is not as bad as I thought it would be. 2 tiny dings, one on the top of head and the other on the bottom outside egde under the knobs. and a small scuff mark next to the bottom ding.

I think the lenght of the strap has something to do with it coming loose. as I seem to realize it mostly happens when I shorten the strap, causing more of an angle between the strap and the straplock. I can't recall it coming loose when my strap was long, having less of an angle pulling on the straplock. I don't know, I'm still PO'ed. my 100% mint 97 Fortress One is not mint anymore....DAMN

I've swapped out all the straplocks on my Wicks for the Dunlop "dual design"; I even swapped out the straplocks on my new SSII - 2 days after I got it! Sadly, the Warwick straplocks just can't be trusted...

Is this dual design new? I have never heard of them.
how did you deal with the hole from the internal locks?

don't know if it's new...basically you can use the strap button as a traditional one, by just slipping the strap slot over it.

sorry, I should have mentioned that I did not have to deal with internal strap locks. all my wicks had the standard external locks.

here's what I was thinking about.


I just have fill the hole with some wood or wood putty or a mix of something.

Yep, everyone swears by the Schallers...I like them too. Just decided to go with the Dunlops cause they were readily available to me.

I've heard that people have had great success filling the hole (at least partially) with glue and toothpicks!

toothpicks, well that one way for sure. I should have thought about that.
I did something simular when fixing a loose door hinge in my house. took the hinge off and filled the holes with glue and wooden golf Tee's then redrilled.
so I guess the toothpicks or something along that line would work. cool
 
I use the schallers on all my other basses & swear by them, they are great. As for filling the hole with glue & tooth picks or golf tee's, thats not the right way to go. Im looking at turning some maple down, tinting it brown & glueing that in to the bass, then putting these locks onto it. You wouldnt see it behind the felt pad anyways. Anyone got any old drum sticks lying around???!

I have not seen the Dunlop "dual design" just the regular ones. I have seen people use the Schallers. I have used the Dunlops and Warwick and none of them has EVER failed me. sorry to hear this happened to you bro.

Them kebab sticks from the supermarket are about the right size.;)
 
That sucks. I've never had a problem with mine, knock on wood.
 
Sorry, I'm not clear on what happened...did the screwed in part rip out or did the actual locking bit fail?

I had a gig on Saturday and did a bit of maintenance and noticed that the butt end lock was very loose...just needed screwing back in. I think they could do with longer screws myself.

Other than that, I've not had any problems with the actual lock part failing.

All my old drum sticks are kinda hacked up, from
carving strips offa them with a utility knife. I stuff
the strips into holes with some white glue, to plug
the holes for redrilling. I just never seem to have
any toothpicks around when I need them ....

Now for folks who happen to be OCD enuf to take
your suggestion of making a maple, lathe-turned,
match-tinted dowel plug ... you left out one very
OCD touch:

You gotta drill out the old screw hole to a clean
bore and make the dowel plug to that diameter,
to maximize contact area, and also to know in
your OCD heart of hearts that even the part that
no one can see has been done most righteously.
