First post and want a Warwick!

Hi, this is my first post.

I don't own a Warwick at the moment, but I've pretty made up my mind that I'm going to get one! Spending several hours reading the forum has helped me make this decision! The big question is which one.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to sell something in order to do this. I currently have a Rickenbacker 4003 and a Geddy Lee jazz! If it comes to it I'll sell both although it's going to kill me to sell/trade the Ric. I love the sound and look of Ricks and desperately wish I could keep it, but as I was recently made reduntant from my job(after 9yrs) I can't justify buying another bass outright.

I have played a few Warwicks (there's a retailer a few miles from where I live which always has some in stock) and liked them a lot! The reason I think I went for Ric/Fender is because they were the sounds that I grew up with and those were the sounds I wanted to get. The thing is I've come to the conclusion that I want something different tone wise rather than trying to emulate the classic sounds! This explains (I think) why I keep thinking about the Warwicks that I tried and how much I liked the feel and sound of them.

Another conclusion I've come to is that I much prefer the smaller size of Warwicks, well the ones I tried anyway. To be honest I don't what models (one may have been a FNA Jazzman) they were, I just picked them up and played them. Then walked away as I mistakenly didn't think they were what I was after! Also I didn't like the look of them, but I've done a complete 180 on that (don't know how/why that happened) and love the way they look now!

As I said I'm prepared to sell/trade both my basses (and some other stuff) if I have to in order to get a Warwick, I can see about getting more when the job situation changes :) so I need to make sure I get the right one. I've only been playing a few months and like a variety of music so versatility is probably important. I like the Warwick growl as well as more smoother tones. I've got to say that I love the look and size of the thumb and wondered if this might fit the bill?

I'm hoping to go this weekend and try whatever they have in stock, but would really appreciate any advice and help you could give first.

I'm quite excited about this and am looking forward to joining the club, if you'll have me!

You should really play around with all warwicks you can and get a good deal on one. They are truly amazing basses :)

Only you can decide what bass fits you as a player. Most first posts ask that same question, "Which one?" And while you can get valuable information here, it comes down to you deciding what elements combine to make the bass you want. Play as many as you can and ask questions. Fortunately there isn't a wrong decision!
 
Welcome to the forum man - the above advice is pretty spot on, try them all till you find what suits but you mention a thumb - this would be a good place to start either NT or BO. :D

a new Wic can be somewhat pricy. have you checked the for sale section of the forum?

some of us have some nice ones there for sale and the prices are not as high as the new ones. plus many of our basses are there in great condition. just a thought that maybe for the price of 1 new wic you could get 2 from the forum.

I'd try and keep the Ric if you can, I have a feeling you might regret selling it!

Know what you mean about the small bodies on the Warwicks, the body on my Thumb BO is really sexy. You really must try out as many as you can. Soundcontrol in Salford has a huge selection on one wall... but you'll be there a long time! :wink:

Stroud, I'm in Mansfield, not to far from yourself. The dealer I'm going to is Electromusic in Doncaster, you probably know it.

For those saying keep the Rickenbacker, I know what you mean. I'm trying to come up with a way of doing this without selling it :cry: One way or another though I'm going to get a Warwick of some description, that's for definite!
 
Plus I've just been listening to a DVD I have of Nightwish and just love the tone that Marco Tapani Hietala is getting from his bass! I believe he plays an Infinity, is that right?
 
Well if you want growl, and a good degree of versatility, the Corvette std Bubinga is a great bass, especially for the money. Same goes for the vette $$, tis the king of all things versatile! The BO is incredibly good value, but the NT is a huge price increase...

But each 'wick has its own way of being awesome. Try as many as you can get your mitts on, and try not to fall in love with all of them :wink:

...actually I'm thinking of dropping that... I resolved in the new year to be all sweetness and light and to be kind, patient and understanding in all my dealings with mankind... not going very well at the moment, though!
