Just play what you do normally but be mindful of keeping the notes of a similar volume...it's as simple as that.

Aside from recording your playing (which I thoroughly recommend) there is no magic tool.

Find a piece of music that would suit loud, medium and quiet passages and practice that making sure you pay attention and almost over emphasise the changes.

You'll get great control, your ears will improve and you'll gain a sensitivity for dynamics in music.

Try even using your thumb (Sting style) for the soft bits or playing at the neck joint for a softer, bassier sound and then dive back to the bridge for your medium level. It's a great tool to know that if you play at say 5 (volume terms) as medium, that you can go down to 1 or up to 10 when required, just with your fingers.

any suggestions, for how to find a band, i mean im in one, but they don't allow me to play bass how i want, or even sound how i want, we've only written one song, so i can't really call it a band i guess, but how would i find people, without just stumbling into them randomly

Advertise in your local music gear shop - there are also some websites that you can find other musicians.

How do you mean they don't allow you to play how you want or sound how you want?
 
well if its above, the 12 fret its crap according to the entire band, unless the sound is very trebly its crap, and my drummer who i wanna punch in the face half the time, says if you come up with it, it is crap, and i come up with it its perfect, he will not even consider it if he didn't come up with it, like he hums out what he wants us to play, of course we don't because, well, it sounds pretty lame most of the time, he had one good idea, and we turned it into a song, and then he said you know what, why would you write such a crappy song, at that point my guitar player and I, just put down our instruments and went out side to cool down :evil: :evil:

Man, that's ace! Talk about a pile of poo! Tell them they're wrong - and that's official...Gman says so :wink:

Have to admit, they do sound a bit dictatorial, which is fine if they're the main songwriter, they know what they want and are happy for you to play it 'your way'...alot of bands work this way. Your band's ethic doesn't seem particularly healthy.

If you can't find a decent band to play in, try to find a good guitarist/singer that you get on with. Drummers can be replaced with computer drum grooves (EZ Drummer is wicked) and put that GarageBand to good use.
 
the guitarist and i are the main song writers, im looking for a new band now, im excited, i can't wait to see who comes up in the adds, if i wanted to audition people how would i do it, im think of just having them learn a song that i like, and play it along with them, and see how they do it, im thinking of the song Death Blooms by Mudvayne for this, any suggestions

having to "audition" people really isnt a very good idea because that usually means he is there to "work" ... and when one person "works," he demands either monetary compensation or well, a compensation of some sort.

i suggest you going to places where they allow ppl to play original music ... check out the crowd (i do hope the age requirements are a bit lax in your area) and be friends with like minded people - tip is: you can make friends easily by helpng ppl carry stuff or assist them after their set (just intrude politely), or plainly just congratulating for the set they played (be sincere though cause these ppl can detect BS patronism).

i have to admit its a bit hard for you to get in a scene like this since you are 14 and chances are ppl will underestimate your capabilities because of that... so you can always do the search in your school (thats how i started).

just remember: its better to find a very cool personality thats a beginner rather than get someone who is "skilled" yet too much of an arse-hole.

as for the song suggestion "Death Blooms" ... it will be VERY HARD to find a DRUMMER for that. but oh well, if you can find someone who could do the Mudvayne double kicks who also has a nice personality ... you are very lucky.
 
yah that is the problem with my drummer, he can do that stuff, he's been playing for 8 years now, but i can't stand him, hmm i know that there is shows at the canyon club, the kids there are pretty talented, i think i'll look there
 
Do you have Rock School or Weekend Warriors in LA?Might be worth looking into. :idea:
 
we have join the band (which i was already in, and hated it) and i we have School of Rock, i think im gonna go to one of their shows and check some people, it should be fun
 
im thinking of just going to samash and checking out guitar players (NHS of course)

All i can say about your band is LOL, dude your 14 and have a musicians being that way. IMO just tell them the f'off. That attitude won't help anyone.

Bands are all about roles, and you need to find them, they differ from bands though. As a bass player you need to be able to keep in time with the drummer and play with him. Get a decent foundation for the guitard to solo over really :wink:

I found its best to get together an paly covers, getting an idea of how you all work that way then move onto originals. All bands I've been in started this way and gave us all a great way to judge each other and find the best way to work.

As for finding musicians, aren't there any at your school? as this sometimes i best place to start and then go from there and look through the classifieds and any jam sessions or band meet things.
 
well i am starting my freshmen year on wednesday so that is definitely on my list for things to do, find a band
