check the top of this bass

it looks like wenge that is cut at an angle (one can see that on the side).

what do you think ?
 
Yea! You're right! It does kinda look like wenge with awesome grain, cut from the side!
 
Looks like a painted finish to me... a little too regular for real wood...

I'm curious as to wether it's real wood or paint...

Sorry mate but that isn't true - there are a huge number of factors that can make woods vary greatly, from the tree itself to how it's cut. Have a look at this page which clearly shows how much a single wood can vary.
 
If that's real wood, it sure is unique. But I personally find it ugly and plastic like............... :(

My first thought is 'it's a composite'.

Looking at the way it conveniently wraps around all the control knobs I'm hedging toward a paint finish. Though a composite could be made to wrap your knobs too. :shock:

look carefully. sure its not just reflections off the knobs?
 
It's Ziricote, and the knobs 'wraparound' effect is due to countersinking around the knobs. Check the original ebay page and it's all there....

He says it is Macassar Ebony, but if it really is, it's the straightest grain I've ever seen, all woods included.

Actually he says it's similar to Ziricote or Macassar (Ebony).............So we're still not sure.

I really can't see what makes you think it's not just a superb piece if Ziricote or Macassar ebony...sure, the lines are really straight, but their spacing is wonky, and it's not as if we've never seen wood that cool...
 
yer its jus so shifty the way the "grain" lines up with the control knobs in such a way
