Sydney's only & newest bass shop has recently opened it's doors to supply bass players with high end gear,finally.The shop is conveiently located at the same sight as the old Bassplayer at 31 Parramatta Road Annandale.Location is the only thing this new shop has in common with the old shop,which was owned & run by a different group of people entirely.
When I walked into the shop I was greeting by 3 staff members,Matt,Evan & Peter,all were very willing & able to help out &/or answer any question I had,no matter how silly the question.Being greeted by,"welcome to Bass people" was a very refreshing change from the usual lack of friendly service I've become used to at other music shops in Sydney.This shop is very different,in a good way.There's no cheap basses here,the MTD's start at around $1000 going up to the Alembics at around $12,000.Other brands include Fender,Warwick & EBMM.Soon Ritter basses wil be in stock too.The amp room is great with a plasma screen in front of a lounge chair with bass DVD's to keep the bored partner happy while you go gaga over all the sweet gear on offer.This shop stocks some serious gear including Thunderfunk,Epifani & Aguilar amps,Shroeder cabs,Alembic pre-amps & Acoustic Image amps with Mark Bass amps & cabs soon to come.
I was encouraged to plug in any bass in the shop & the amp room has a neat switching board so you can grab a bass & try out any amp in the shop without having to go to each amp.This is a very cool thing that all music shops should have.I sat down with a JE Buzzard,a beautiful pair of S1's,Thumb 5BO,Infinity SN & a couple very nice Corvette $$'s.The Alembics were out of this world & what impressed me was the fact that every bass in the shop was in tune & set up professionally by none other than Jeff Mallia.Who also happens to be the luthier I go to.This shops is nothing short of bass heaven.

As far as getting a job there,I sent in my resume when they were taking applications so hopefully some day,fingers crossed.

Justin,trust me.It's worth crawling over broken glass to see this shop.You'll be invited to plug in the first bass you look at when you walk in the door.There's no question in your mind like,"would this bass play better if it had new strings & a good set up done"?Every bass is set to the max.They also have reasonably priced bass cd's & DVD's.I picked up Victor Wooten's Soul Circus.I think I'll go back tomorrow & get the Jonas Hellborg CD I should've bought today.It'll give me a good exxcuse to go & play that CS Streamer S1 on the rack.

id love to give a thumb a play, and that sweet looking infinity without the f holes

It amazed me how different that Thumb 5BO is to my 5NT.Not in a better or worse way,just different.If you're thinking Thumb,I strongly suggest you try both.
 
yer, well i dunno if il be able to afford another warwick 4 a while (parents bout the $$ :P ) but when i do have the money, i wanna know what im after
then il get it from the custom shop :D
 
Dang! Between 5 big-chain music stores and a bass-only shop here in town, even with all their inventories combined, they still can't begin to touch what Bass People has :shock:

Makes me want to move down under!

I would stop in every day just to see and play that SS1 in the first picture! SWEET!
 
Getting a job in a shop like that would be like a dream come true :shock:

That replica 50s Precision in the bottom photo... goes against all my instincts but I just love those! If they just had a hidden button you could switch on to make it sound like my Thumb, I think I'd get one!
 
i feel with you for the excitement.

in my region, there are only shops that sell basses, guitars and amps.

but none of them is made to let you check stuff in an easy way.

you have to look for cables, basses are not set up, not to mention that they are out of tune.

the shop sounds really good, because it seems like there are some bass freaks working there, that makes it go from "shop" to "good shop".

by the way:
i like the shiney streamer, and the all-black alembic with black strings...
 
that's awesome greg... i remember the old store from my sydney days... glad it's had an update!

what's Intermusic in Bondi Junction like?

Thanks, Greg, for the great review - and everybody else for the positive feedback. Bass People has been a dream of mine for a long time - so it is very exciting to make it a reality.

BTW, Joel Burton, the General Manager, is a long time Warwickian.

well lex, im not sure, it might be another shop im thinking, but i think it closed down (not 100% sure)

and welcome david to the forum. jus out of curiosity, do you stock musicman basses? :?

cant wait to get out to this shop. its good to be an Aussie! :D
